NHL roundup: Flyers fire coach Laviolette

The SportsXchange

Coach Peter Laviolette was fired three games into the season by the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday.

"Right from the first day of training camp I was worried about how the team looked," general manager Paul Holmgren said. "We have a long way to go this season, but it's about how we played and it was unacceptable. It was a gut feeling that I had to make a change."

Before Laviolette, no NHL head coach was fired less than four games into the season. The last was Denis Savard by the Chicago Blackhawks, four games into the 2008 season.

Assistant coach Craig Berube was promoted to replace Laviolette. The Flyers are off to a 0-3-0 start to the season. Assistant coach Kevin McCarthy, who came with Laviolette from the Carolina Hurricanes, was also fired.

---Washington Capitals right wing Alex Ovechkin, Montreal Canadiens center Lars Eller and Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury were named the NHL's "Three Stars" for the week.

Ovechkin led the league with four goals, six points, three power-play goals, five power-play points and 24 shots on goal.

Eller factored in five of Montreal's seven goals, tying for second in the league with three goals and five points as the Canadiens split their opening two games.

Fleury posted a 2-0-0 record with a 0.50 goals-against average, .979 save percentage and one shutout as the Penguins opened the season with a pair of victories.

---The Toronto Maple Leafs called up Jamie Devane and Trevor Smith from the AHL Marlies.

Devane, 22, made his NHL debut on Saturday in a win against Ottawa and was then was send back to the Marlies for Sunday's game against Lake Erie.

Smith, 28, joined the Leafs organization this season after spending time with the Islanders, Lightning and Penguins.
