NHL roundup: Blues sign Ott to two-year contract

Free agent center Steve Ott signed a two-year, $5.2 million deal to stay with the St. Louis Blues, who acquired him in the blockbuster trade with the Buffalo Sabres last season that included goaltender Ryan Miller.

Ott posted just three assists in the 23 games after the trade to St. Louis with two assists in six playoff games. Ott won 53 percent of his 423 draws last season and is likely to be used on the third or fourth line.

Ott, 31, notched 23 points, 92 penalty minutes and 254 hits with the Sabres and Blues last season.

---The Detroit Red Wings re-signed veteran right winger Daniel Cleary to a one-year contract on Thursday.

The deal is worth $1.5 million with a $1 million bonus for games played, according to TSN.

Cleary, 35, played in 52 games last season for the Red Wings and had eight points. The former first-round draft pick has 385 points in 921 career games in the NHL with the Chicago Blackhawks, Edmonton Oilers, Arizona Coyotes and Red Wings.

---The Ottawa Senators re-signed forward Derek Grant to a one-year, two-way contract, the team announced Thursday.

Grant, 24, played in a career-high 20 NHL games in 2013-14, recording two assists. He played in 46 games with Ottawa's American Hockey League affiliate, the Binghamton Senators, scoring 12 goals and 10 assists, while recording 30 penalty minutes.

---The Pittsburgh Penguins re-signed forward Jayson Megna and defenseman Philip Samuelsson to one-year, two-way contracts, the team announced Thursday.

Megna's deal has an average annual value of $874,125 at the NHL level. Samuelsson's deal has an average annual value of $550,000 at the NHL level.

Megna, 24, saw NHL action for the first time in 2013-14, tallying five goals, four assists and nine points in 36 regular-season contests. He also suited up for two playoff games.

---The Anaheim Ducks signed defensemen Mat Clark and Jesse Blacker to one-year contracts, the team announced Thursday.

Clark, 23, has played two career NHL games with Anaheim, going scoreless in 2011-12. Clark has four goals and 36 assists with 316 penalty minutes in 237 career American Hockey League games with Norfolk, Syracuse and Manitoba.

Blacker, 23, has 11 goals and 42 assists with 129 penalty minutes in 180 career AHL games with Norfolk and the Toronto Marlies. Selected by Toronto in the second round (58th overall) of the 2009 draft, Blacker was acquired from the Maple Leafs with second-round and seventh-round selections in the 2014 draft in exchange for Peter Holland and Brad Staubitz.

---The Florida Panthers and defenseman Erik Gudbranson agreed to terms on a two-year contract, the team announced Thursday.

Gudbranson, a restricted free agent, had three goals and nine points in 65 games while averaging 17:58 of ice time per game. He led the Panthers with 158 hits and was fifth with 91 blocked shots. The third pick of the 2010 draft by the Panthers, the 22-year-old defenseman has five goals, 21 points and 239 penalty minutes in 169 NHL games.

---The Tampa Bay Lightning signed free agent forward Jerome Samson and re-signed forward Brett Connolly to one-year, two-way contracts, the team announced Thursday.

Connolly, 22, had one goal and four penalty minutes in 11 games last season for the Lightning. He also played for Syracuse in the AHL and had 21 goals and a team-leading 36 assists for 57 points in 66 games.

Samson had 27 goals, including 11 on the power play, and 56 points in 68 games with the St. John's Ice Caps of the American Hockey League last season. He also had three goals and six points in 17 AHL playoff games to help St. John's reach the Calder Cup Final. The 26-year-old last played in the NHL in 2011-12, with five points in 16 games with the Carolina Hurricanes.
