NHL, players continue talks

The SportsXchange

The NHL and the players' associaton resumed talks Thursday morning at league headquarters in New York after a five-hour meeting Wednesday.

Thursday was scheduled to be opening day of the regular season, but the league has canceled the first two weeks of the season and is in a holding pattern while the lockout continues.

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said Wednesday night that the league believes the players' association is crafting a proposal and he urged the players to present it. No offers have been made in three weeks.

"We understand you're working on a proposal. Make it to us," Daly said.

ESPNNewYork.com reported that the players' union also is encouraging the league to come up with a proposal of its own. But Daly said economic issues at the heart of the lockout weren't brought up. Wednesday's meeting included discussions on health and safety and legal issues.

Daly estimated that the lockout has cost the league as much as $250 million.
