Hurricanes 2, Avalanche 1

Goaltender Justin Peters made 33 saves as the surging Carolina Hurricanes held off the Colorado Avalanche.

Jordan Staal and Patrick Dwyer scored for Carolina, who improved to 3-0-1 on their homestand.

Paul Stastny scored in the second period for the Avalanche, who lost for the first time on the road (6-1-0) and fell to 14-3-0 on the season.

Panthers 3, Ducks 2

Brad Boyes scored the tiebreaking goal at 4:29 in the third period and the Florida Panthers ended their nine-game losing streak with a win over the red-hot Anaheim Ducks.

The Panthers' (4-11-4) win was the first for the team in three games played under interim- coach Peter Horachek, while the Ducks (15-4-1) had their five-game winning streak snapped.

Coyotes 3, Blues 2 (overtime)

Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored 56 seconds into overtime and Mike Smith stopped 37 shots to lead the Phoenix Coyotes to a win over the St. Louis Blues.

Phoenix (13-4-2), winners of seven of eight, are off to their best start since the it began the 1998-99 season with a 14-2-2 mark.

Lightning 2, Canadiens 1 (shootout)

Valtteri Filppula scored the shootout winner to give the Tampa Bay Lightning a win over the Montreal Canadiens.

Ben Bishop stopped 28 shots for the Lightning, who have won four of five, while Carey Price delivered 44 saves for Montreal, who have dropped four of five.

Sharks 3, Flames 2 (overtime)

San Jose center Joe Thornton took a long shot that deflected off Sharks defenseman Brad Stuart and trickled through the legs of Flames goalie Reto Berra for the game-winning goal.

The Sharks (11-2-5) had dropped their previous five games and appeared headed in that direction yet again after losing a 2-0 lead in the third.

Sabres 3, Kings 2 (shootout)

Goaltender Ryan Miller made 43 saves and stopped both Los Angeles attempts in the shootout to lead the Buffalo Sabres to a victory over the Kings.

Cody Hodgson scored two goals for Buffalo (4-15-1), who avoided becoming only the second team in NHL history to lose their first 10 home games of the season.

Islanders 3, Predators 1

John Tavares, Pierre-Marc Bouchard and Kyle Okposo scored, and goalie Kevin Poulin carried a shutout deep into the third period as the New York Islanders snapped a four-game losing streak.

Poulin, making back-to-back starts for the second time this year, recorded 32 saves.

Devils 3, Rangers 2

Goaltender Martin Brodeur stopped 33 shots and Jaromir Jagr recorded an assist on the Devils' game-winning goal in the third period.

Dainius Zubrus scored off his own rebound in front of New York goalie Henrik Lundqvist at 17:05 of the third period to snap a 2-2 tie.

Capitals 4, Blue Jackets 3 (overtime)

Alex Ovechkin lifted a rebound off a Marcus Johansson shot to give the Capitals a victory over the Blue Jackets in overtime.

Washington's Mikhail Grabovski tied the score with 1:45 remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime for the Capitals (10-8-1), who snapped a two-game losing streak.

Flyers 5, Senators 0

The Philadelphia Flyers scored at least one goal in each period, getting two from Jakub Voracek in the second, and let goaltender Steve Mason take care of the rest.

Mason stopped 24 shots for his first shutout of the season as Philadelphia stopped Ottawa's winning streak at three games.

Jets 3, Red Wings 2 (shootout)

Devin Setoguchi and Andrew Ladd scored in the shootout to give the Winnipeg Jets a win over the Detroit Red Wings.

Center Bryan Little and defenseman Zach Bogosian scored for Winnipeg (9-9-2) in regulation. Andrej Pavelec made 41 saves in the first 65 minutes. (Editing by Peter Rutherford)
