2013 NHL Trade Deadline: Trade tracker & analysis

The NHL's trade deadline is Wednesday, April 3, at 3pm ET. Here are moves that were made in advance of the deadline with analysis.

COLUMBUS

ACQUIRED
Patrick Killeen, G

ACQUIRED
Future considerations

PITTSBURGH

ANALYSIS: A sixth-round pick in 2008, Killeen has toiled the past three seasons in the ECHL.

(Trade completed April 3, 2013.)

MINNESOTA

ACQUIRED
Jeff Deslauriers, G

ACQUIRED
Future considerations

ANAHEIM

ANALYSIS: The Wild get some goaltending depth on the cheap. Deslauriers has bounced around the pros for nearly a decade, with NHL cups of coffee in Edmonton and Anaheim.

(Trade completed April 3, 2013.)

WASHINGTON

ACQUIRED
Martin Erat, F
Michael Latta, F

ACQUIRED
Filip Forsberg, F

NASHVILLE

ANALYSIS: Erat had a no-trade clause, but he clashed with coach Barry Trotz, had only four goals this season and wanted out of Nashville, the only NHL team he has ever known. GM David Poile got a great return by packaging Erat with Latta for Forsberg, the 11th overall pick in the 2012 draft and a top prospect. Erat typically produces around 20 goals and can help the Capitals on the power play. Latta, a third-round pick in 2009, is a 6-foot center who has yet to play in the NHL.

(Trade completed April 3, 2013.)

BOSTON

ACQUIRED
Wade Redden, D

ACQUIRED
7th round pick (2014)

ST. LOUIS

ANALYSIS: After adding Jay Bouwmeester (Editor's Note: We incorrectly said Robyn Regher earlier; of course, he went to the Kings) and Jordan Leopold, the Blues had a logjam on defense. Redden resurfaced in the NHL this season after the New York Rangers buried him and his contract in the minors for two years. He played 23 games for the Blues. Most important for the Bruins, he has played 1,017 regular-season games and 101 playoff games in the NHL. He adds depth and experience.

(Trade completed April 3, 2013.)

NEW JERSEY

ACQUIRED
Steve Sullivan, F

ACQUIRED
7th round pick (2013)

PHOENIX

ANALYSIS: A former ninth-round pick goes for a seventh-round pick. Sullivan still has value as a smart, skilled veteran and can help depending on how much he has left. He just played his 1,000th NHL game. He has five goals and 12 points in 33 games this season.

(Trade completed April 3, 2013.)

ANAHEIM

ACQUIRED
Matthew Lombardi, C

ACQUIRED
Brandon McMillan, F

PHOENIX

ANALYSIS: After being traded by Toronto, Lombardi had only four goals and eight points in 21 games for the Coyotes. But he’s a veteran centermen who has 40 games of playoff experience and adds depth. McMillan, a third-round pick in 2008, had one assist in six games for the Ducks this season.

(Trade completed April 3, 2013.)

TORONTO

ACQUIRED
Ryan O'Byrne, D

ACQUIRED
4th round pick (2014)

COLORADO

ANALYSIS: Not the deal people were expecting from the Maple Leafs, but trading for a depth defenseman might have been a better move in the long run than trading for a goaltender, whether Roberto Luongo or Miikka Kiprusoff. O’Byrne is a rental.

(Trade completed April 3, 2013.)

SAN JOSE

ACQUIRED
Raffi Torres, F

ACQUIRED
3rd round pick (2013)

PHOENIX

ANALYSIS: The Sharks lost toughness when they traded Ryane Clowe. Torres, a rental, replaces that. He can skate and make a positive physical impact, as long as he stays on the edge. He has kept his game under control this year after serving a 21-game suspension for his hit on Marian Hossa last season. The Sharks had plenty of picks after their earlier moves.

(Trade completed April 3, 2013.)

COLUMBUS

ACQUIRED
Blake Comeau, F

ACQUIRED
5th round pick (2013)

CALGARY

ANALYSIS: Hey, the Flames made a good move! They turned a one-time waiver pick-up into a draft pick. The Jackets replaced some of the forward depth they lost in the Gaborik deal.

(Trade completed April 3, 2013.)

MINNESOTA

ACQUIRED
Jason Pominville, C
4th round pick (2014)

ACQUIRED
Johan Larsson, F
Matt Hackett, G
1st round pick (2013)
2nd round pick (2014)

BUFFALO

ANALYSIS: Pominville was not the problem in Buffalo. He was the Sabres’ captain, a character guy who competed every night. He can quarterback a power play, skate in the top six, score and check, and he’s not a rental. The Wild gave up good prospects in Larsson and Hackett, which will help the Sabres as they rebuild, but they had organizational depth. Minnesota gained an experienced, heart-and-soul guy that can help a group headed into its first playoffs.

(Trade completed April 3, 2013.)

COLUMBUS

ACQUIRED
Marian Gaborik, RW

ACQUIRED
Derick Brassard, F
Derek Dorsett, F
John Moore, D
6th round pick (2013)

NY RANGERS

ANALYSIS: Gaborik gives the Blue Jackets a speedy former 40-goal scorer, a legit superstar. The Rangers rid themselves of a faded star who wasn’t performing this season. It says a lot that Gaborik waived his no-trade clause to go from New York to Columbus. The Rangers cleared salary-cap space, and with only one amnesty buyout left, they can use it on Brad Richards if they so choose. They regained some of the depth they lost to Columbus in the Rick Nash deal last summer. Brassard fills a hole at center. Dorsett, a winger, has a broken collarbone but could return for the playoffs. Moore is a skating defenseman.

(Trade completed April 3, 2013.)

PHILADELPHIA

ACQUIRED
Steve Mason, G

ACQUIRED
Michael Leighton, G
3rd round pick (2015)

COLUMBUS

ANALYSIS: The Flyers traded Sergei Bobrovsky to Columbus, only to watch him shine for the Blue Jackets. Now they acquire Mason, a past winner of the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s rookie of the year, but a goalie who has struggled with his confidence. If he struggles with his confidence in Columbus, how will he fare in Philly? This could lead to an amnesty buyout of Ilya Bryzgalov this summer. Leighton is a pending unrestricted free agent.

(Trade completed April 3, 2013.)

OTTAWA

ACQUIRED
Cory Conacher, F
4th round pick (2013)

ACQUIRED
Ben Bishop, G

TAMPA BAY

ANALYSIS: Lightning GM Steve Yzerman needed to address his goaltending, but he’s banking on potential again and paid a high price. Bishop covers a lot of net at 6-foot-7, 214 pounds. But so does the guy Yzerman acquired last year: Anders Lindback, who is 6-foot-6, 210. Bishop has a lot of potential, but so does Lindback, who hasn’t been the answer. The Lightning has a better chance of developing someone with two goaltenders instead of one, and Conacher cooled off considerably after his hot start. But Senators GM Bryan Murray, who has Robin Lehner in net and Craig Anderson coming back from injury, did well to flip Bishop for an actual young player and not just picks.

(Trade completed April 3, 2013.)

PITTSBURGH

ACQUIRED
Jussi Jokinen, F

ACQUIRED
Cond. 7th round pick (2013)

CAROLINA

ANALYSIS: Jokinen cleared waivers recently because no one wanted to pick up his contract, which has one more year at $3 million. But the Hurricanes reportedly are eating some money in this deal, a feature of the new collective bargaining agreement. He can play center or wing, and the Penguins suddenly need depth at center because of Sidney Crosby’s jaw injury.

(Trade completed April 3, 2013.)

EDMONTON

ACQUIRED
Jerred Smithson, C

ACQUIRED
4th round pick (2013)

FLORIDA

ANALYSIS: Smithson provides no offensive punch, but the young, run-and-gun Oilers don’t need that. They need size, experience, depth and help on faceoffs. Smithson is listed at 6-foot-3, 209 pounds and has played 36 playoff games. He can win draws. A rental.

(Trade completed April 3, 2013.)

SAN JOSE

ACQUIRED
Scott Hannan, D

ACQUIRED
Cond. 7th round pick (2013)

NASHVILLE

ANALYSIS: Hannan is a former Shark on an expiring contract. He replaces Douglas Murray, now also a former Shark on an expiring contract, whom GM Doug Wilson traded for a second and a conditional second last week. So Wilson essentially kept the status quo on defense while upgrading his assets.

(Trade completed April 3, 2013.)

BOSTON

ACQUIRED
Rob Flick, F

ACQUIRED
Maxime Sauve, F

CHICAGO

ANALYSIS: The first trade of deadline day was a minor-league deal. Flick was a fourth-round pick in 2010 who has toiled in the minors. Sauve was a second-round pick in 2008 who has played only one NHL game.

(Trade completed April 3, 2013.)

TAMPA BAY

ACQUIRED
Philippe Paradis, F

ACQUIRED
Kirill Gotovets, D

CHICAGO

ANALYSIS: Gotovets, a 2009 seventh-round pick, has played the past three seasons at Cornell. He scored two goals and added 15 assists this season. Paradis has one goal and eight points in 36 games in the AHL this season.

(Trade completed April 2, 2013.)

NY RANGERS

ACQUIRED
Ryane Clowe, LW

ACQUIRED
2nd round pick (2013)
3nd round pick (2013)
Cond. 2nd round pick (2014)

SAN JOSE

ANALYSIS: Clowe has zero goals and the Rangers have the worst offense in the NHL. Clowe is slow and has battled injuries this season, too. But Clowe brings the size, grit and toughness the Rangers lost when they parted with guys like Brandon Prust and Mike Rupp. He has had a lot of bad luck offensively and has been playing better lately. The Sharks received a good return for a player who wasn’t contributing on an expiring contract. If the Rangers re-sign Clowe or make the Eastern Conference final, the conditional pick will be a second-rounder in 2014. If not, the pick becomes a fifth-rounder in 2014.

(Trade completed April 2, 2013.)

DALLAS

ACQUIRED
Cameron Gaunce, D

ACQUIRED
Tomas Vincour, C

COLORADO

ANALYSIS: The Stars continue to add defensemen. Gaunce was a second-round pick in 2008 and has played 11 NHL games. Vincour, a fifth-rounder in 2009, leaves the organization along with Czech star Jaromir Jagr. He has played 86 games for the Stars over the past three seasons, bouncing up and down from the minors.

(Trade completed April 2, 2013.)

MONTREAL

ACQUIRED
Davis Drewiske, D

ACQUIRED
5th round pick (2013)

LOS ANGELES

ANALYSIS: When the Kings acquired veteran Robyn Regehr, they had no role for Drewiske, a character player who can fit solidly on the Canadiens’ third pair. He was never drafted, but the 28-year-old has 126 games of NHL experience.

(Trade completed April 2, 2013.)

EDMONTON

ACQUIRED
Garrett Stafford, D

ACQUIRED
Dane Byers, F

WASHINGTON

ANALYSIS: Two minor-leaguers. Stafford, who was never drafted, had one goal and 21 points in 48 AHL games prior to the trade. He has two assists in seven NHL games – two for the Detroit Red Wings, three for the Dallas Stars and two for the Phoenix Coyotes. Byers, a second-round pick in 2004, had six goals, 10 points and 144 penalty minutes in 58 AHL games. He has one goal and 60 penalty minutes in 14 career NHL games – six with the New York Rangers, eight with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

(Trade completed April 2, 2013.)

BOSTON

ACQUIRED
Jaromir Jagr, RW

ACQUIRED
Lane MacDermid, F
Cody Payne, F
Cond. 2nd round pick (2013)

DALLAS

ANALYSIS: The Bruins lost out on Brenden Morrow and Jarome Iginla, who ended up with the Pittsburgh Penguins. But they struck gold when the Stars decided to trade Jagr, a pending unrestricted free agent. Jagr is 41 but can still play, and he addresses their greatest weakness – the power play. He has 14 goals, which would tie him for the Boston team lead. He has six power play goals, three more than any current Bruin. The draft pick will become a first-rounder if the B’s make the conference final, but that would be fine with them. The prospects are not considered among the Bruins’ top 10. Had the Bruins acquired Iginla, they would have given up a first-rounder and one of their top three prospects.

(Trade completed April 2, 2013.)

PHOENIX

ACQUIRED
Matthew Clackson, F

ACQUIRED
Joel Rechlicz, F

WASHINGTON

ANALYSIS: Two minor-leaguers. Clackson was a seventh-round pick in 2005 and has never played in the NHL. Rechlicz, an enforcer, was never drafted. He has played 26 NHL games – three for the Capitals – and has 105 penalty minutes.

(Trade completed April 2, 2013.)

VANCOUVER

ACQUIRED
Derek Roy, C

ACQUIRED
Kevin Connauton, D
2nd round pick (2013)

DALLAS

ANALYSIS: Roy could be a critical piece for the Canucks, who have long searched for help at center. When everyone is healthy, the Canucks could have Henrik Sedin, Ryan Kesler and Roy down the middle – or Kesler could play on the wing with Roy centering the second line. Addressing the need in the middle could give the Canucks more flexibility to move goaltender Roberto Luongo because they don’t need to focus on receiving a center in return. The Stars got good value for a player with an expiring contract. Connauton has offensive skill and is working on his defensive game.

(Trade completed April 2, 2013.)

CAROLINA

ACQUIRED
Marc-Andre Bergeron, D

ACQUIRED
Adam Hall, F
7th round pick (2013)

TAMPA BAY

ANALYSIS: A rare trade with rentals going both ways. Bergeron helps the Hurricanes’ shaky power play as they try to make the playoffs. Hall temporarily returned to the Lightning, which had lost him to Carolina on waivers March 16...and then lost him to the Flyers.

(Trade completed April 2, 2013.)

ST. LOUIS

ACQUIRED
Jay Bouwmeester, D

ACQUIRED
Conditional 1st round pick (2013)
Mark Cundari, D
Reto Berra, G

CALGARY

ANALYSIS: The Blues have been looking for a left-shot, top-4 defenseman for a long time, and they beat out the rival Red Wings for Bouwmeester when the Wings wouldn’t give up a first-round pick. Bouwmeester isn’t a rental. He has another year on his contract at a $6.68 million cap hit, which is significant for the budget Blues. Two knocks on Bouwmeester: He’s overpaid, and he has never played in the playoffs. But he’s skilled and defends well, and he can help the Blues get to the playoffs, ending his drought. The pick is valuable to the Flames as they start their rebuild, but these are not top prospects.

(Trade completed April 1, 2013.)

LOS ANGELES

ACQUIRED
Robyn Regehr, D

ACQUIRED
2nd round pick (2014)
2nd round pick (2015)

BUFFALO

ANALYSIS: The Kings needed help on defense because of injuries to Matt Greene, who might be back for the playoffs, and Willie Mitchell, who probably won’t. Regehr is rugged like Mitchell, and he knows coach Darryl Sutter. He went to the Stanley Cup final under him with the Calgary Flames in 2004. This is an embarrassment for the Sabres, who once begged Regehr to waive his no-trade clause to come to Buffalo and now asked him to waive it to leave. But they got the going rate for a good rental defenseman – two second-rounders.

(Trade completed April 1, 2013.)

ANAHEIM

ACQUIRED
Harry Zolnierczyk, F

ACQUIRED
Jay Rosehill, F

PHILADELPHIA

ANALYSIS: The Flyers wanted an enforcer after losing Jody Shelley to a hip injury and Tommy Sestito on waivers. The Ducks stockpiled the speedy Zolnierczyk in the minors.

(Trade completed April 1, 2013.)

CHICAGO

ACQUIRED
Michal Handzus, C

ACQUIRED
4th round pick (2013)

SAN JOSE

ANALYSIS: The Blackhawks needed depth at center and help on faceoffs. They struggle in the circle after dominant captain Jonathan Toews. The Sharks at least got a pick for Handzus, who has only one goal and two points this season on an expiring contract.

(Trade completed April 1, 2013.)

ST. LOUIS

ACQUIRED
Jordan Leopold, D

ACQUIRED
2nd round pick (2013)
Conditional 5th round pick (2013)

BUFFALO

ANALYSIS: The Blues add a mobile two-way defender who can help the power play as the great Buffalo sell-off begins.

(Trade completed March 30, 2013.)

PHILADELPHIA

ACQUIRED
Kent Huskins, D

ACQUIRED
Cond. draft pick (2014)

DETROIT

ANALYSIS: With an injured list as long as Chris Pronger, the reeling Flyers are looking for defensive help wherever they can find it.

(Trade completed March 30, 2013.)

EDMONTON

ACQUIRED
Kale Kessy, F

ACQUIRED
Tobias Rieder, F

PHOENIX

ANALYSIS: The Oilers and Coyotes flip their fourth-round picks from the 2011 NHL entry draft. Rieder, a native of Germany, put up better numbers in the OHL than Kessy did in the WHL.

(Trade completed March 29, 2013.)

PITTSBURGH

ACQUIRED
Jarome Iginla, RW

ACQUIRED
Kenneth Agostino, F
Ben Hanowski, F
1st round pick (2013)

CALGARY

ANALYSIS: The big one. Pittsburgh pries loose the face of the Flames' franchise for the past decade-and-a-half in the hopes that Iginla and Sidney Crosby can rekindle their magic from the 2010 Olympics. Will it work? After Crosby suffered a broken jaw just minutes into Iginla's first game as a Penguin, it looks like we're going to have to wait for the playoffs to find out.

(Trade completed March 27, 2013.)

PITTSBURGH

ACQUIRED
Douglas Murray, D

ACQUIRED
2nd round pick (2013)
Conditional 2nd round pick (2014)

SAN JOSE

ANALYSIS: The Penguins wanted a tough, stay-at-home defenseman to bolster their blue line, and Murray fits the bill.

(Trade completed March 25, 2013.)

PITTSBURGH

ACQUIRED
Brenden Morrow, LW
3rd round pick (2013)

ACQUIRED
Joe Morrow, D
5th round pick (2013)

DALLAS

ANALYSIS: Brenden Morrow can be slotted anywhere in Pittsburgh's lineup, from the first line to the fourth. He can still score and contribute offensively, but his biggest assets might be his physical play, veteran savvy and leadership. The Stars made the tough decision to part ways with their captain as Brenden Morrow is eligible for unrestricted free agency this summer. Dallas gets a promising defense prospect in Joe Morrow.

(Trade completed March 24, 2013.)
