NFL roundup: Griffin's status remains uncertain

Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan did not indicate Monday whether he expects quarterback Robert Griffin III to return to the lineup for Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Shanahan told reporters only that Griffin would be evaluated on a daily basis. Shanahan did not say whether he expects Griffin to participate fully in Wednesday's practice, but he added that the rookie would be the starter once he's healthy.

Griffin sat out Sunday's game at Cleveland because of a mild sprain of the lateral collateral ligament in his right knee. Backup Kirk Cousins, another rookie, filled in and led the Redskins to a 38-21 win over the Browns.

In other Redskins news, relatives of linebacker London Fletcher reportedly were involved in an altercation with Browns fans Sunday that resulted in the arrest of three family members.

According to reports, Fletcher's family was harassed after the Redskins' 38-21 win and stadium security intervened with Tasers.

Fletcher, a Cleveland native, said Monday he blamed the security personnel and not the fans.

Meanwhile, Redskins offensive tackle Jordan Black was suspended without pay for four regular-season and postseason games after violating the NFL policy on performance-enhancing substances.

Black will begin serving the suspension immediately, the NFL announced in a statement. He will be eligible to return to the active roster the day after the fourth regular-season or postseason game.

--Running back Rashard Mendenhall was reinstated by the Pittsburgh Steelers after being suspended one game for skipping the team's Week 14 game against the San Diego Chargers after learning he would be inactive.

Despite the suspension, Mendenhall and the Steelers are engaging in contract talks, ESPN.com reported Sunday. Mendenhall will be a free agent at the end of the season.

--Dallas Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant likely will undergo surgery after the season that requires a bone graft to repair his broken left finger.

Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said the graft would come from bone tissue in Bryant's hip, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

However, Bryant said he wants it to come from a different source.

In other Cowboys news, defensive tackle Josh Brent was on the sideline for Sunday's game, but team officials did not know he was going to be there, multiple media outlets reported.

Brent was charged with vehicular manslaughter in an accident that resulted in the death of teammate Jerry Brown Jr.

--As Chicago's slide continued Sunday with a home loss to NFC North rival Green Bay, boos rained down on the Bears from frustrated fans. And Chicago linebacker Brian Urlacher didn't like it.

"Two of the people I don't care about: fans or media," Urlacher told WFLD-TV. "They can say what they want to about our head coach, about our players. It does bother me. They don't know what they're talking about, obviously. I know there are a lot of experts in the media, a bunch of smart guys out there who know exactly what they're talking about all the time. They don't know what they're talking about."

The Bears also made a roster move Monday, promoting offensive tackle Cory Brandon from the practice squad.

Brandon spent the preseason with the Bears, and he was part of the practice squad for nine weeks. To create a roster spot for Brandon, the team moved defensive tackle Matt Toeaina onto injured reserve. Toeaina might need arthroscopic knee surgery, ESPNChicago.com reported.

--Green Bay tight end Jermichael Finley answered a weekend report that the Packers would part ways with him after this season with his words and actions Sunday.

Finley caught five passes for 61 yards in Sunday's 21-13 win over Chicago and afterward spoke about a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel story that indicated he wouldn't be around next year.

"I think that's just media," Finley told ESPN. "That's just talk out there. I haven't seen anything yet. They haven't shown me any signs. I'm here as far as I know."

--Investigators found steroids in the room where Garrett Reid died of a heroin overdose at the Philadelphia Eagles' training camp this summer, a prosecutor said Monday.

The anabolic steroids did not contribute to Reid's death, Northampton County District Attorney John Mroganelli said.

Reid, 29, who battled drug problems for years and died Aug. 5 in a dorm room at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa., was the son of Eagles coach Andy Reid.

--The Browns released cornerback Dmitri Patterson. Signed as a free agent over the offseason, the veteran started four of seven games and totaled 28 tackles with five passes broken up.

However, he suffered an ankle injury in mid-October that kept him out of seven games. By the time Patterson returned, he had fallen down the depth chart and was playing in dime situations of late.

--The San Francisco 49ers re-signed wide receiver Chad Hall to the practice squad, the team announced.

Hall was originally signed to the 49ers' practice squad Nov. 27 and was released Saturday.
