NFL roundup: Raiders make deal for QB Schaub
Matt Schaub gets a new start as a starting quarterback with the Oakland Raiders.
Schaub was traded from the Houston Texans for a sixth-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the Raiders announced Friday. He would sit atop an Oakland depth chart with Terrelle Pryor and Matt McGloin also under contract.
Schaub lost his starting spot with the Texans in the midst of a 14-game losing streak that led to Houston earning the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 draft. It was widely presumed he would be cut before the start of free agency, but with no deadlines for bonuses in his contract structure ahead, the Texans held onto Schaub to invite trade offers.
---Wide receiver Lance Moore signed a two-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers, effectively replacing veteran receiver Jerricho Cotchery, who left in free agency for the Carolina Panthers.
Moore, 30, was released by the Saints last month. He was scheduled to make $3.8 million in 2014, including a $500,000 roster bonus. The Saints saved more than $2.5 million against the salary cap by releasing Moore.
Moore was with the Saints since joining the practice squad in 2005 -- a longer tenure than anyone else on the roster. He ranks in the top five in franchise history with 346 catches and 38 touchdown receptions. He also has 4,281 receiving yards. After his first 1,000-yard season in 2012, he was limited to 37 receptions for 457 yards with two touchdowns last year. A hand injury caused him to miss three weeks early in the season.
---Offensive lineman John Jerry signed with the New York Giants, the team announced Friday.
Jerry, formerly of the Miami Dolphins, was one of the offensive linemen named in NFL investigator Ted Wells' report of the team's bullying scandal.
Jerry, Richie Incognito and Mike Pouncey were named by Wells as players who participated in "a pattern of harassment" against teammate Jonathan Martin, who left the team in October and has since signed with the San Francisco 49ers.
Jerry, 27, has started every game at right guard in each of the last two seasons. The 349-pounder has also played tackle. In four years with the Dolphins, he has played 57 games.
---The Baltimore Ravens agreed to a one-year contract with safety Darian Stewart on Friday.
Stewart has 141 tackles (94 solo), four sacks, one interception (returned 27 yards for a touchdown), 15 pass breakups, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery over four NFL seasons -- all with the St. Louis Rams.
---The Carolina Panthers reached a two-year agreement with free-agent wide receiver Tiquan Underwood and agreed to a one-year deal with cornerback Antoine Cason on Friday.
Underwood will likely compete as the third receiver and a spot on special teams as a kick returner. He caught a career-high 24 passes for 440 yards with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last year. He was a seventh-round draft pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2009.
---Unrestricted free agent defensive end Corey Wootton signed with the Minnesota Vikings on Friday.
The contract is for one year, according to Wootton's agent. NFL.com reported that the deal pays Wootton up to $2 million. Wootton, who is recovering from hip surgery, was with the NFC North rival Chicago Bears for the past four years.
---Tight end Michael Palmer agreed to a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday.
Palmer bounced from the New York Giants to Seattle Seahawks in the 2013 offseason after three seasons with the Atlanta Falcons.
The Steelers claimed him off waivers in August 2013. Palmer played in all 16 games last season, primarily on special teams. He had one reception for eight yards.
---The Detroit Lions agreed to a deal to retain defensive lineman Andre Fluellen, according to the Detroit Free Press.
Fluellen had three tackles in 13 games with the Lions last season. The Lions selected Fluellen in the third-round of the 2008 draft. The 29-year-old has 55 tackles and 2.5 sacks in 69 games.
---Quarterback Greg McElroy announced via Twitter on Friday that he is retiring from the NFL.
McElroy, 25, was a seventh-round draft choice of the New York Jets in 2011 out of Alabama. He appeared in two games with the Jets in 2012, completing 19 of 31 passes for 214 yards with one touchdown and one interception. McElroy is currently on the Cincinnati Bengals' roster.
