NFL roundup: Packers lose Bulaga, sign QB Young

The SportsXchange

The Green Bay Packers lost starting left tackle Bryan Bulaga for the season, but added veteran quarterback Vince Young.

The team confirmed Monday that Bulaga is out for the season with a torn ACL. Bulaga was injured during practice on Saturday.

Bulaga was moved from right tackle to the left side as part of the Packers' revamping of the line to better protect quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who was sacked a league-high 51 times last year.

Injuries have caused Bulaga to miss 11 games over the past two seasons.

Meanwhile, Young signed a one-year deal with the Packers after a workout for the team Monday morning, according to ESPN's Josina Anderson.

Young, 30, a former first-round draft pick and a two-time Pro Bowl participant, last played in the NFL in 2011 with the Philadelphia Eagles. He was cut by the Buffalo Bills in training camp last August.

---San Francisco 49ers All-Pro linebacker Patrick Willis recently had surgery to repair his fractured right hand, ESPN reported.

Willis is expected to return in about three weeks. That means he will be ready before the 49ers open the season against the Green Bay Packers on Sept. 8.

He sustained the injury last Wednesday while going against fullback Bruce Miller during a one-on-one pass-rush drill.

---Robert Griffin III is champing at the bit to ramp up his on-field work, but the Washington Redskins quarterback is heeding the plan created by head coach Mike Shanahan as the team takes a cautious approach with RG3's recovery from knee surgery.

The quarterback participated in 7-on-7 drills during the opening week of training camp and will slowly be introduced to more work, but isn't expected to play during the preseason.

"Coach (Shanahan" is really taking the reins on this one and holding me out of a lot of stuff," Griffin said Monday. "I'm doing everything they're asking me to do right now. I feel like I'm in rhythm out there throwing the ball in the 7-on-7 reps that I do get. And that's all I can do, just continue to prove to them and to the players that I'm ready to play."

---Tampa Bay Buccaneers star cornerback Darrelle Revis is expected to play in the season opener against his former team, the New York Jets.

Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik told Peter King of TheMMQB.com that he is "almost certain" that Revis will play on Sept. 8. Revis has been rehabbing from a torn ACL he sustained while playing for the Jets last season.

---The New Orleans Saints agreed to a one-year deal with free agent wide receiver Steve Breaston, ESPN reported.

Breaston, 29, had knee inflammation early in the offseason, but his agent, Eric Metz, told ESPN in March that the wide receiver was medically cleared after MRIs revealed nothing alarming.

Breaston was released by the Kansas City Chiefs in February.

--- The Philadelphia Eagles released their first training-camp depth chart on Monday, but it provided no hint as to which player will win the starting quarterback spot.

Michael Vick and Nick Foles both were listed as first string.

Another player listed on the first-string offense is wide receiver Riley Cooper, who is not even with the team at the moment. Cooper has taken a leave as he deals with the outcry of his use of a racial slur.

---Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Junior Hemingway and offensive tackle Dustin Waldron are out with injuries, the Kansas City Star reported.

Hemingway has a sprained a thumb while Waldron is nursing a dislocated knee cap.

---The Jacksonville Jaguars waived injured wide receiver Taylor Price, the team announced.

Price, who has been battling a stress fracture in his foot since last year, was claimed by the Jaguars in 2011.

---The Indianapolis Colts waived linebacker Monte Simmons, the team announced.

Simmons signed with the Colts practice squad in October of last year.

---The Oakland Raiders announced that they signed free agent defensive lineman Ryan Baker.

Baker has seven tackles (five solo), 0.5 sacks and one pass defensed in 17 games over four years, all with the Miami Dolphins.

The Raiders waived injured nose tackle Johnny Jones to make room for Baker on the roster.

--- The San Diego Chargers signed free agent linebacker Jerrell Harris. Terms of the deal were not released.
