Buffalo Bills rookie quarterback EJ Manuel will have a minor knee operation and miss at least the rest of the preseason, the team announced Saturday.

Manuel had swelling in his left knee a day after his strong performance in Friday's preseason win over the Minnesota Vikings. He completed 10 of 12 passes for 92 yards with a touchdown.

First-year coach Doug Marrone said in a statement released by the team that Manuel will be re-evaluated at the end of the preseason. Kevin Kolb will start the Bills' next preseason game against the host Washington Redskins on Aug. 24.

Also, wide receiver Kevin Elliott will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL.

---The San Diego Chargers announced Saturday that wide receiver Eddie Royal, who left practice Saturday in an ambulance, has a bruised lung and a concussion.

Royal fell hard to the ground while trying to make a catch during a drill. He was able to get up and walk to the trainer's area before going back down. He was treated with an oxygen tank. Royal was then carted off and taken away in an ambulance that arrived on the scene. Coach Mike McCoy said that Royal was having trouble breathing before he was transported to the hospital.

Royal is in his second year with the Chargers. He had 23 catches for 234 yards with a touchdown last year. He spent the first four years of his career with the Denver Broncos.

Also, rookie cornerback Steve Williams is expected to miss the entire season with a torn pectoral muscle he sustained during Thursday's preseason loss to the Chicago Bears.

---Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Doug Martin said he does not have a concussion after taking a knee to his helmet against the New England Patriots on Friday.

Martin left the game after getting hit by defensive end Chandler Jones's knee while pass blocking. After the game, Martin said he passed all concussion tests.

Martin had just one carry for four yards in the 25-21 loss. He is coming off a rookie season in which he rushed for 1,454 yards with 11 touchdowns. He also made 49 receptions for 472 yards with a TD.

---Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White has a minor ankle sprain and is likely out for the remainder of the preseason, ESPN reported Saturday.

The 17th-year veteran and future Hall of Famer said he would join the team Saturday and begin working out Sunday. He added that he will be ready to play the Falcons' next preseason game against the Tennessee Titans on Aug. 24.

---The Chicago Bears signed quarterback Jordan Palmer and defensive tackle Eric Foster, and waived defensive lineman Jamaal Anderson and linebacker Andrew Starks, the team announced Saturday.

The Bears are looking for a third quarterback after Matt Blanchard fractured a knuckle on his non-throwing hand during Thursday's preseason win over the San Diego Chargers. Josh McCown backs up starter Jay Cutler.

Foster appeared in 49 games with 19 starts over four seasons with the Indianapolis Colts (2008-11) after signing with the team as an undrafted free agent out of Rutgers. He had 117 tackles, six sacks, four pass break ups, three fumble recoveries and one forced fumble.

It is not known if he will be able to play during the remainder of the preseason but should be ready for the regular season opener Sept. 8 against the Miami Dolphins.

---The Detroit Lions agreed to contract terms with veteran cornerback Rashean Mathis, ESPN reported Saturday.

Mathis, who turns 33 at the end of the month, was a Pro Bowler in 2006 but has only played a full season once since then. He left the Jacksonville Jaguars in March.

The Lions also signed veteran linebacker Rocky McIntosh, who played for the St. Louis Rams last season and the previous six for the Washington Redskins.

McIntosh, 30, had his best season in 2010 when he had 70 tackles with the Redskins.

The Lions struggled with tackling in a 24-6 preseason loss against the Cleveland Browns on Thursday.

---The Philadelphia Eagles announced Saturday that they signed defensive end Eddie McClam.

McClam went undrafted out of Old Dominion in 2012. He spent last season with the Detroit Lions. McClam had 42 tackles his senior season in 2011 and blocked seven kicks over his collegiate career.
