NFL roundup: Jets' Sanchez to miss final preseason game

New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez will not play in Thursday's preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles because of a shoulder injury suffered on Saturday, the team confirmed Sunday.

Sanchez took a hard hit late in Saturday's 24-21 victory over the New York Giants, and there was some concern that Sanchez might miss significant playing time as a result.

The Jets announced Sunday that Sanchez's status is day-to-day, but offered no details on the severity of the injury.

ESPNNewYork.com reported that it's unclear whether Sanchez will be ready for the regular-season opener, and the New York Daily News reported the Jets are still determining the extent of the injury.

Geno Smith played the first three quarters Saturday before Sanchez entered the game.

"We had the starting offense out there for three full quarters and I put Sanchez in, and unfortunately, the best play he makes probably all of preseason, he ends up getting hurt on it," coach Rex Ryan said on the Jets' team website.

The Jets are bringing in free-agent quarterback John Beck for a work out. Beck's last NFL action came with the Washington Redskins in 2011. The former second-round draft pick has started seven games in his career. Four of those came as a rookie in 2007 with the Miami Dolphins.

---New York Giants safety Stevie Brown tore his ACL in his left knee and is out for the season.

Brown was injured during an interception return in Saturday's 24-21 preseason overtime loss to the New York Jets. He fell untouched at the end of the return and grabbed his left knee.

"I feel bad for Stevie," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said after the game. "He has been a tremendous addition to our team. The guy has another interception and then has that happen."

The Giants played without starting safety Antrel Rolle, but he is expected to be recovered enough from a sprained ankle to play the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 8.

Brown led the Giants with eight interceptions last season. He signed a one-year deal with the team and was expected to start.

Also, the Giants released linebacker Aaron Curry.

Injuries to Kevin Kolb and EJ Manuel have forced the Buffalo Bills to search for a healthy quarterback and the Bills have found their man in former Heisman Trophy winner Matt Leinart.

The Bills signed the former first-round pick. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Most recently a member of the Oakland Raiders, Leinart has started 18 games since being drafted 10th overall by the Arizona Cardinals in 2006. The 6-foot-5 USC product has completed 366 of 641 passes for 4,065 yards with 15 touchdowns and 21 interceptions in his NFL career.

---The Oakland Raiders released kick returner/wide receiver Josh Cribbs, according to multiple media reports.

Cribbs signed a one-year contract in May but has been dealing with knee problems. Cribbs received $225,000 of a one-year, $1.25 million deal, according to Yahoo! Sports. He was owed $865,000 in base salary and $160,000 in per-game roster bonuses.

Cribbs spent eight seasons with the Cleveland Browns and has been regarded as one of the NFL's top returners. He led the league in return yards in 2007. He averaged 27.4 yards per kick return last year, the third highest of his career. He also averaged 12.0 yards per punt return on a career-high-tying 38 returns.

---Oakland Raiders coach Dennis Allen said Terrelle Pryor will be the team's starting quarterback for Thursday's final preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Allen said the team has decided to rest Matt Flynn, who is bothered by elbow tendinitis.

Flynn presumably remains the team's No. 1 quarterback, but he was bothered by elbow issues last year in preseason. He ended up losing a preseason battle with Russell Wilson for the Seahawks' starting quarterback job.

---The Pittsburgh Steelers announced that rookie linebacker Jarvis Jones was released from a hospital after X-rays taken of his injured chest came back negative.

Jones, the Steelers' first-round draft choice in April, was hospitalized after leaving Saturday night's preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs with a chest injury. Jones was injured in the fourth quarter of the 26-20 loss.

The Steelers made Jones the No. 17 overall pick in the draft after linebacker James Harrison left to sign with the Cincinnati Bengals. Jones is competing with Jason Worilds for a starting spot.

---The Green Bay Packers announced they signed kicker Zach Ramirez and released six players, including quarterback Graham Harrell.

Ramirez, an undrafted free agent out of Portland State, was in the Seattle Seahawks' rookie minicamp in May. He was a first-team All-America (FCS) by the Associated Press and first-team All-Big Sky Conference in 2011 after making a school-record 24 field goals on 27 attempts (88.9 percent). He was limited to six games as a senior last year because of a knee injury. He made 4 of 7 field goals.

ESPN reported Saturday that the Packers were releasing Harrell, which means Vince Young will likely back up Aaron Rodgers. Harrell was 6-for-13 passing for 49 yards in Friday's 17-10 preseason loss to the Seattle Seahawks. He served as Rodgers' backup last season after spending two years on the practice squad.

---The Baltimore Ravens terminated the contract of veteran tight end Visanthe Shiancoe, who was signed after Dennis Pitta was lost to a season-ending injury.

An 11-year veteran, Shiancoe was expected to compete for playing time alongside Ed Dixon. However, the team also signed veteran Dallas Clark, and the Ravens also have Billy Bajema, Matt Furstenburg and Alex Silvestro in the tight end mix.

Baltimore announced the signing of quarterback Dayne Crist and placed outside linebacker Adrian Hamilton on injured reserve.

---The Jacksonville Jaguars trimmed their roster down to 75 players Sunday after cutting 12 players and placing one on injured reserve.

Long snapper Jeremy Cain was the most significant of the roster cuts. He had been with the Jaguars for seven seasons. Luke Ingram was also released, so Carson Tinker is the team's only long snapper.

Jacksonville also cut guard Mark Asper, punter Ken Parrish, cornerback Lionel Smith, linebacker Maalik Bomar, linebacker Jeremiah Green, defensive end J.D. Griggs, defensive end Paul Hazel, wide receiver Jamal Miles, safety Ray Polk and tackle Roderick Tomlin.

---The Indianapolis Colts announced they waived 11 players and reduced their roster to 78.

The Colts waived cornerback Johnny Adams, cornerback Allen Chapman, guard Danous Estenor, defensive tackle Kellen Heard, place kicker Brandon McManus, running back Davin Meggett, linebacker C.O. Prime, center Rick Schmeig and safety Ashante Williams.

Wide receiver Maurice Williams was waived with an injury settlement and cornerback Teddy Williams was waived-injured. The Colts also placed linebacker Lawrence Sidbury on injured reserve.

---The Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday released six players and still have to release six more players by 4 p.m. ET Tuesday to get to the required 75-player limit.

The Bengals terminated the contract of Richard Quinn, making the fifth-year tight end a free agent.

The five other players waived were first-year defensive tackle Vaughn Meatoga, as well as four undrafted rookies, wide receiver Jheranie Boyd of North Carolina, cornerback Terrence Brown of Stanford, linebacker Jordan Campbell of New Mexico Highlands and kicker-punter Quinn Sharp of Oklahoma State.

---The San Francisco 49ers are trying to trade quarterback Colt McCoy, the NFL Network reported.

If they get no takers, the team likely will release him.

McCoy and Scott Tolzien have been competing for the backup spot to Colin Kaepernick. The 49ers also signed Seneca Wallace last week.

The 49ers acquired McCoy from the Cleveland Browns before the April draft for two draft picks.

---The Chicago Bears cut 14 players Sunday, including safety Tom Zbikowski.

Zbikowski, a former third-round draft pick out of Notre Dame, started 11 games for the Indianapolis Colts last year. He also played four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens.

The Bears also cut wide receiver Devin Aromashadu, defensive end Kyle Moore, running back Curtis Brinkley, defensive tackle Eric Foster, tackle A.J. Lindeman, center P.J. Lonergan, safety Derrick Martin, tight end Gabe Miller, tight end Leonard Pope, defensive tackle Brent Russell, linebacker Patrick Trahan, punter Tress Way and linebacker Lawrence Wilson.

---Washington Redskins cornerback and punt returner Richard Crawford is out for the season with a torn lateral collateral ligament and torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

He was injured while returning a punt in the first quarter of Saturday's 30-7 win over the Buffalo Bills.

Rookie Chris Thompson filled in for Crawford and returned three punts for 48 yards.

---Former Tennessee Titans linebacker Keith Bulluck was arrested and charged with felony robbery after he was accused of taking money away from a cabdriver during an argument Sunday morning in Nashville, Tenn.

According to a statement released by the Nashville Police Department, Bulluck approached the cab, which was waiting outside a bar for a paid fare. There was an altercation in which Bulluck took a $100 bill from the cabdriver and fled. The cabdriver called 911 at 3:50 a.m. Once police arrived, the cab driver led them to Bulluck in a nearby parking lot and police arrested him.

Officers noticed the cab driver's shirt and undershirt were torn and that Bulluck smelled of alcohol, according to the report.

Bulluck was booked into jail and released on a $10,000 bond. He is due to appear in court Sept. 26.
