The SportsXchange

Two teams mentioned as a possible destination for Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson are the San Francisco 49ers and the New York Jets.

If the 49ers are interested, they are not saying. But the New York Jets did not deny that Jackson is on their radar screen.

"We're looking at a number of players, including DeSean," Jets owner Woody Johnson said Sunday at the NFL owners' meetings in Orlando, Fla., according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The 49ers were more tight-lipped. "Right now, he's under contract with the Philadelphia Eagles," 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said at the NFL owners' meetings in Orlando, Fla., according "We've not made any contact with the Eagles relative to a trade for DeSean Jackson. As of this moment, those reports are totally misleading and false."

---New York Jets owner Woody Johnson said Sunday that he called commissioner Roger Goodell before the team signed quarterback Michael Vick last week.

"We've checked -- we've talked to everyone. Commissioner Goodell, I had one conversation with him about Mike," Johnson said at the NFL meeting in Orlando, Fla. "I think he'll be a real positive to help us get better. Not only at the quarterback position but also as a team."

Johnson was asked when he spoke to Goodell before signing Vick on Friday.

"I spoke to him a while ago. I don't remember exactly when," Johnson said. "We didn't talk about evaluating Michael Vick in terms of his throwing motion. Just in terms of (him as a) person. He was, very very supportive. Not really character references but to see what he's like and have a conversation. Quarterback's a really important position so we're going to do our due diligence."

---The Baltimore Ravens acquired offensive lineman Jeremy Zuttah from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a 2015 draft pick.

The exact round of the pick was not immediately disclosed. Zuttah, 27, had an uneven season with the Bucs in 2013. He is expected to start at center in Baltimore, according to

Zuttah was a third-round draft pick out of Rutgers in 2008. He appeared in 90 games and opened 76 over his six seasons with the Buccaneers.

---Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said the team remains open to signing free agent running back Maurice Jones-Drew, even though he left town without a contract.

Jones-Drew will have to reduce his reported asking price of $3.5 million per year to get a deal done, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Tomlin said he "felt good" about last week's meeting with Jones-Drew and said "we're open" to the possibility of signing him

Jones-Drew, who has spent his entire seven-year career with the Jacksonville Jaguars, also is attracting interest from other teams, including the New York Jets.

---Former Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith took out a newspaper ad in The Charlotte Observer to thank fans for their support throughout his 13-year stint.

Smith was released March 13 after the Panthers failed to find a trade partner for him. He signed a three-year, $11 million contract with the Baltimore Ravens one day after he was cut.

Smith wrote in the three-quarter page ad in Saturday's newspaper that "it's hard to accurately express all the emotions I have felt over the last several weeks."
