NFL Roundup: Freeney headed to Chargers, Williams in lawsuit with former fiancee

The San Diego Chargers agreed to a two-year, $8.75 million contract with free agent defensive end Dwight Freeney, according to multiple reports. Freeney also reportedly has incentives in the contract tied to the number of sacks he gets that could make the deal worth up to $13.35 million.

Freeney, one of the most feared pass rushers of the last decade, was cut by the Indianapolis Colts during the winter after a slow 2012 season.

Freeney visited the Chargers during the week. He also drew interest from the Denver Broncos and New England Patriots, but those teams reportedly were not prepared to pay his asking price.

The Chargers are in need of a pass rusher after losing second-year player Melvin Ingram to a torn ACL this week in practice and Shaun Phillips to free agency. However, they did sign free agent linebacker Thomas Keiser on a one-year contract.

Freeney was held to just 12 tackles and five sacks in 14 games last season. He missed two games with an ankle injury. However, he led the Colts with 34 quarterback hurries. For his career, Freeney has 107.5 sacks in 10 years with the Colts.

---Buffalo Bills defensive lineman Mario Williams is in a legal battle with his former fiancee over a $785,000 engagement ring. The Houston Chronicle reported that attorneys for Williams and Erin Marzouki met with a mediator but an agreement was not reached.

Marzouki's attorney, Tony Buzbee, said that a court will have to settle the issue.

Buzbee said that Williams had "dramatic mood swings throughout the engagement" and expressed suicidal thoughts in a series of text messages with Marzouki last November. He said Williams eventually broke off the engagement in December.

Williams, a former Houston Texan, filed the lawsuit last week in Harris County (Texas) state district court against Marzouki, a former Texans employee. He countered that she ended their engagement.

According to the suit, Marzouki "unilaterally terminated" the engagement on Jan. 21, 2013, and refuses to return the diamond engagement ring, which she promised to do if the relationship ended.

Buzbee released three pages of text messages sent to Marzouki's cell phone from Williams on Nov. 11, 2012. Williams wrote: "I took 3 hydrocodones this morning and no one knows" and "I'm going to take 2 more on the plane and fade away." He also wrote: "No money in the world should leave me with suicidal thoughts."
