NFL roundup: Eagles release Jackson, sign Sanchez

The SportsXchange

The Philadelphia Eagles announced on Friday that they released wide receiver DeSean Jackson and signed quarterback Mark Sanchez.

Jackson's surprising release comes two years after he signed a five-year contract extension. He was due $10.5 million this year and $30.5 million over the rest of the deal, but none of it was guaranteed.

Jackson issued a lengthy statement after his release was announced. In the statement, he also addressed a report by NJ.com tying him to a Los Angeles gang.

"... I would like to address the misleading and unfounded reports that my release has anything to do with any affiliation that has been speculated surrounding the company I keep off of the field," Jackson said. "I would like to make it very clear that I am not and never have been part of any gang. I am not a gang member and to speculate and assume that I am involved in such activity off the field is reckless and irresponsible."

Sanchez's one-year contract is for $2.25 million and includes a $750,000 signing bonus, according to ESPN. It also includes up to another $1.75 million in bonuses, bringing the maximum value of the deal to potentially $4 million.

Sanchez is recovering from surgery for a torn labrum that kept him out for 2013. He also had arthroscopic knee surgery last season.

Nick Foles is the Eagles' starter, but Sanchez, 27, has plenty of experience as a starter.

---The Oakland Raiders signed three free agents to contracts -- running back Maurice Jones-Drew and defensive linemen C.J. Wilson and Pat Sims.

Jones-Drew's contract is a three-year deal, according to multiple reports.

Jones-Drew figures to have a better chance of starting in Oakland than with Jacksonville. The 29-year-old will compete against Darren McFadden for the starting job.

Wilson joins the Raiders after spending four seasons with the Green Bay Packers. Last season, he played in eight games with no starts and totaled 10 tackles, including four solos.

Sims signed a one-year contract, his agent, Rick Smith, announced on Twitter. He started 16 games for the Raiders in 2013 and finished with a career-high 54 tackles.

---The Miami Dolphins confirmed that unrestricted free agent running back Knowshon Moreno signed a one-year contract. According to reports, the deal is worth up to $3 million.

Moreno rushed for 1,038 yards and 10 touchdowns and caught 60 passes for 548 yards and three scores last season for the Denver Broncos.

---The Denver Broncos signed unrestricted free-agent offensive tackle Winston Justice to a new one-year contract.

Justice, 29, has played 63 regular-season NFL games (43 starts) in eight seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles (2006-11), Indianapolis Colts (2012) and Broncos.

---The Pittsburgh Steelers agreed to terms on a two-year deal with free-agent running back LeGarrette Blount, ESPN.com reported.

The powerful 6-foot, 250-pound Blount rushed for 772 yards, a 5.0 per-carry average and seven touchdowns last season for the New England Patriots.

--- The Washington Redskins announced that they signed unrestricted free agent guard-center Mike McGlynn.

McGlynn, 29, started 14 regular season games and two playoff matchups for the Indianapolis Colts last season.

---The San Francisco 49ers announced they have re-signed cornerback Perrish Cox to a one-year contract.

Cox, 27, was released by the 49ers in November but performed well in the playoffs this past season when he was re-signed and called upon as a replacement.
