NFL roundup: Eagles fire Reid, according to source
A number coaches and general managers are expected to be fired over the next few days, and Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid apparently is the first to go.
A source confirmed via text message to The Sports Xchange that Reid was fired.
Reid has known since Friday that Sunday's game was his last with the team he's coached since 1999.
Reid reportedly met with owner Jeffrey Lurie on Friday and a formal announcement will be made Monday.
FOX Sports' Jay Glazer reported in Sunday's pregame show that Reid was to be fired after a meeting with ownership Monday.
Regardless of the timing, Reid is done with the Eagles, ending the longest-running current marriage between head coach and employer.
The Eagles lost to the Giants 42-7 on Sunday to finish a 4-12 season.
Oregon coach Chip Kelly, Penn State coach Bill O'Brien and the Gruden Brothers -- Bengals' offensive coordinator Jay Gruden and ESPN analyst Jon Gruden -- are considered top options for the Eagles.
---The New York Jets are planning to fire offensive coordinator Tony Sparano, according to an ESPN.com report on Sunday.
In addition, owner Woody Johnson is considering restructuring his front office. Sources told ESPN that coach Rex Ryan is likely to keep his job and is better off having general manager Mike Tannenbaum retained. However, CBS Sports reported that Tannenbaum will likely be fired.
---The Jacksonville Jaguars will fire general manager Gene Smith, ESPN.com reported Sunday.
Sources told ESPN that Arizona Cardinals director of player personnel Jason Licht and San Francisco 49ers director of player personnel Tom Gamble are the top candidates for the job.
The Jaguars reportedly want to keep coach Mike Mularkey, but the new general manager will be left to make that decision.
--Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson joined the 2,000-yard club with a 20-yard gain off the right side of the line early in the third quarter Sunday against Green Bay.
Peterson tore his ACL on Dec. 24, 2011 and entered training camp as a limited participant in August. He began the day 102 yards shy of 2,000 and 207 yards from the single-season record of 2,105 set by Eric Dickerson.
---Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker James Harrison is unlikely to be back with the team next season, CBS Sports reported Sunday.
Harrison, 34, is due $6.57 million and will count $10 million toward next year's salary cap. But because of his age and declining skills, sources inside the organization told CBS Sports they do not think Harrison will be back.
---The New Orleans Saints set an NFL record for most yards allowed in a single season Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.
New Orleans' defense, which ranks last in the NFL, gave up 287 yards in the first half against Carolina, running its total to 6,799 yards. That surpassed the mark of 6,793 by the Baltimore Colts in 1981.
---New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski, who has been out the past five games with a broken forearm, was activated for Sunday's game against the Miami Dolphins.
---San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis was activated for Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals, according to NFL.com.
Davis sustained a concussion last Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks and was listed as questionable on the team's injury report.
---Chicago Bears middle linebacker Brian Urlacher did not play in Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions. Urlacher, who practiced on a limited basis Friday and was listed on the team's injury report as questionable, has been out since he strained a hamstring on Dec. 2 against the Seattle Seahawks.
---Cincinnati Bengals running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis injured a hamstring during pregame warm-ups on Sunday and was not scheduled to play against the Baltimore Ravens, the Bengals announced.
---Green Bay Packers wide receiver Randall Cobb was inactive for Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings because of an ankle injury.
