NFL Roundup: Bears, Redskins name new WR coaches, Te'o talks
The Chicago Bears and Washington Redskins on Saturday both filled their vacant wide receivers coach positions for the 2013 season.
The Chicago Bears named Mike Groh as wide receivers coach, completing the staff for new head coach Marc Trestman. Groh spent the last two seasons as Alabama's wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator. He was Louisville's quarterbacks coach in 2010. He started his coaching career in 2000 as an offensive assistant/quality control coach for the New York Jets. He then spent 2001-08 as an assistant with the University of Virginia.
Meanwhile, the Redskins promoted Mike McDaniel, 29, who has been with the Redskins as an offensive assistant the past two years. He also spent 2006-08 with the Houston Texans as an assistant. McDaniel was running backs coach of the United Football League's Sacramento Mountain Lions (originally named the California Redwoods) in 2009-10.
---In other football news, Notre Dame's Manti Te'o told a large gathering of media in Indianapolis for the NFL Combine that he has only recently overcame the embarrassment of the public exposure that he was fooled by a male acquaintance into believing he was dating a woman he genuinely loved.
He'll meet with a total of 20 teams at the Scouting Combine, including two meetings he had Friday - with the Houston Texans and Green Bay Packers. In those 15-minute strictly timed interviews held in team hotel suites, Te'o said he was asked to provide the facts and give a brief overview of what happened.
"They want to be able to trust their player," said Te'o, a 22-year-old All-American projected to be a first-round pick and the second-ranked inside linebacker in the draft by NFLDraftScout.com. "They don't want to invest in somebody you can't trust."
