Aug 10 (The Sports Xchange) - Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. announced that he will retire at the end of the 2015 season. Smith, 36, is fully healthy and confident he could play a few more years. However, Smith said he simply wants to spend more time with his wife, Angie, and four children. Smith, who is entering his 15th season in the NFL, informed his team mates prior to the morning practice and then spoke to the media following the workout. "Me and my family decided that this will be my last year," Smith said. "Go home and be dad and look back and enjoy things. I feel like it's time. My body feels great." Smith led the Ravens last year with 79 receptions and 1,065 receiving yards, along with six touchdowns. -- The New England Patriots released veteran quarterback Matt Flynn and signed former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Ryan Lindley. In other moves, the Patriots reportedly acquired second-year guard Ryan Groy from the Chicago Bears, signed rookie running back Tony Creecy and tight end Logan Stokes and released linebacker Chris White and tight end Mason Brodine. The Patriots sent sixth-round linebacker Matthew Wells to Chicago for Groy, ESPN.com reported. Flynn, 30, signed a one-year deal in June to serve as New England's No. 3 quarterback behind Tom Brady, facing a four-game suspension over Deflategate, and Jimmy Garoppolo. -- Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Shaun Suisham reportedly suffered a torn ACL on Sunday and is expected to miss the season. Suisham sustained the injury to his left knee during the Steelers' 14-3 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in the Hall of Fame Game, and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that he will undergo surgery and likely be placed on injured reserve. -- Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was pulled off the bottom of a pile without a helmet following a training camp fracas with cornerback Josh Norman. Newton, who signed the third-richest contract in the NFL last month, and Norman have a history of trash-talking during scrimmages and practices. Norman recently had a pair of interceptions against Newton and let him know about it. -- A lawsuit against Washington Redskins linebacker Junior Galette reportedly has been dismissed. The suit was vacated because the plaintiff failed to hire a new lawyer or appear in court, ESPN reported. The suit had been filed by a woman who accused Galette of physical and mental abuse during an alleged assault in January at Galette's home in Kenner, La. -- Former Miami Dolphins offensive line coach Jim Turner plans to file a defamation lawsuit against Ted Wells after losing his job for being implicated in the 2014 bullying scandal report. The Dolphins fired Turner and head athletic trainer Kevin O'Neill after Wells' report was released in February 2014 that detailed the actions of guard Richie Incognito and others that led to tackle Jonathan Martin leaving the team in 2013. -- The Tampa Bay Buccaneers officially signed linebacker Lavonte David to a five-year contract extension. The deal, which the Bucs said makes David the highest-paid 4-3 outside linebacker in the NFL, goes through the 2020 season. Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed, but the extension is worth $50.25 million and includes $25.56 million in guaranteed money, according to reports. -- Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Rey Maualuga passed his preseason physical and was cleared to practice. Maualuga, 28, had opened training camp on the active/physically unable to perform list. He was dealing with hamstring issues. -- Philadelphia Eagles defensive back JaCorey Shepherd will miss the entire 2015 season after an MRI exam on Monday revealed that he tore his anterior-cruciate ligament. Shepherd is a rookie who was drafted in the sixth round, but according to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Shepherd looked like the front-runner for that nickel back position until he was injured.
