March 18 (The Sports Xchange) - Cleveland Browns cornerback Joe Haden underwent surgery on his left ankle earlier this week, the team announced. Haden injured his ankle in the Browns' Week 8 home game against the Arizona Cardinals. He is expected to resume football activities during training camp and should be ready for the start of the 2016 regular season. Haden started five games in 2015 and was inactive for eight games because of injuries, including a concussion and rib, finger and ankle injuries. A two-time Pro Bowler, Haden has 16 interceptions in his career with the Browns. --- The Green Bay Packers agreed to terms with running back James Starks on a two-year deal, according to reports. The deal is worth $6 million, a source told ESPN's Adam Caplan. Starks, 30, was a sixth-round pick by the Packers in the 2010 NFL Draft and rushed for 601 yards and two touchdowns last season while sharing time with Eddie Lacy in the backfield. In six seasons with the Packers, Starks has 2,361 rushing yards and nine touchdowns and 883 receiving yards and four touchdowns. --- The New England Patriots officially announced the signing of three players -- defensive end Chris Long, linebacker Shea McClellin and running back Donald Brown. The Patriots also announced that Steve Belichick, son of head coach Bill Belichick, has been named the team's safeties coach. He replaces Brian Flores, who was moved to linebackers coach after Patrick Graham left to join the New York Giants. Long, 30, played eight NFL seasons with the St. Louis Rams, but he was released by the Rams last month. He played in 12 games in 2015, including five starts, and had three sacks. McClellin, 26, played four seasons with the Chicago Bears. He played in 12 games last season, including 11 starts, and made 53 tackles. Brown, 28, played with the San Diego Chargers last season, and he rushed for 229 yards and had eight receptions in 2015. He was released by San Diego earlier this month. --- The Minnesota Vikings officially announced the signings of offensive tackle Andre Smith, cornerback Terence Newman and defensive end Justin Trattou. Smith reportedly agreed on a one-year deal worth up to $4.5 million. Newman signed a one-year, $3 million deal on Tuesday and enters his 14th NFL season. Trattou has appeared in 21 NFL games and had two interceptions last season while playing in five games. --- The Tampa Bay Buccaneers agreed to terms with free agent linebacker Daryl Smith. The deal was reportedly for one year. Smith comes to Tampa Bay after three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens. Smith, 34, was released by the Ravens on March 3 with two years remaining on his contract, and he was scheduled to earn $3.5 million in 2016. He led the Ravens in tackles last season with 121. In his 12-year career, Smith has started 172 of 174 regular-season games played, totaling 1,046 tackles, 68 passes defensed, 30.5 sacks, 13 forced fumbles, 11 interceptions and six fumble recoveries. He has also started all five postseason games he has appeared in, notching 43 tackles, two forced fumbles, one pass defensed, one sack and one interception. --- Cincinnati Bengals offensive lineman Eric Winston was re-elected as president of the NFL Players Association, the NFLPA announced. Winston, 32, ran unopposed in landing his second consecutive two-year term. Named to the NFLPA executive committee were Carolina Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis, Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman, Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Shaun Suisham and New England Patriots guard Ryan Wendell. The quartet joins six holdovers -- free-agent linebacker Lorenzo Alexander, New York Giants long snapper Zak DeOssie, recently retired quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, New York Giants linebacker Mark Herzlich, Indianapolis Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri and Baltimore Ravens tight end Benjamin Watson. --- The San Francisco 49ers formally announced the hiring of five assistant coaches. Joe Bowden was named inside linebackers coach and Vince Oghobaase will be an assistant defensive line coach.
