NFL Fantasy Football Team Defenses: 5 Picks for Week 5

Yahoo Contributor Network

Within the confines of NFL Fantasy Football, the path owners go down in choosing a team defense is quite different than road to picking position players. While the top quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, tight ends, and even kickers are gobbled up quickly, played often, and even sit idle on benches week to week; most fantasy football team owners don't hold on to more than one defense at a time. Consequently, there are often several stellar defenses available. So if you are in the market for a new defense, here are five you should grab if they happen to be available in your league:

Chicago Bears - Chances are someone already has the Bears defense as they are the top scoring defense in terms of fantasy football points this year, and the fact that they are playing the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 5 makes them an even better bet. But if you can snag the Bears defense, do it . . . NOW!

Arizona Cardinals - I personally picked up the 4-0 Arizona Cardinals defense just last week for my team and I'm holding steady as they take on the 2-2 St. Louis Rams on Thursday night. The Cardinals defense leads the league with six fumble recoveries, which is more than one every game. Not too shabby.

Cincinnati Bengals - If you are looking at overall fantasy points, the Cincinnati Bengals may not seem like an obvious choice for a defense. However that total is low given a rough Week 1 performance versus the Baltimore Ravens. The Bengals defense has been strong since then, leading the league in sacks with 17, plus they play the Miami Dolphins this week at home in Cincinnati.

Minnesota Vikings - Much like the Cincinnati Bengals, the Vikings have an underrated defense that is quite likely available in your league. They are the 4th ranked defense in fantasy points based on Yahoo! Fantasy Football, and they are up against the 1-3 Tennessee Titans on their home field in Minnesota this week.

San Diego Chargers - Though the San Diego Chargers defense is ranked in the top ten in fantasy points for defenses, they are only 10% owned in Yahoo! Fantasy Football. They may not be leading in any one category, but they have solid stats with five interceptions, four fumble recoveries, a touchdown and blocked kick. Did I mention they are playing the 0-4 New Orleans Saints Sunday night?
