Is Memphis coach Tommy West in trouble? The Tigers are 1-2 this season, including an ugly 31-14 loss at Middle Tennessee State. But if Memphis wants to change coaches, it will cost the university $3 million to buy out West, who has led the school to five bowls over the past six seasons. Memphis' next three games will be against programs whose coaches also might be at a crossroads: Marshall, at UCF and UTEP. Can a non-Big Six school afford to pay that kind of money to buy out a coach? It is doubtful.
Punishment for Purdue player?
Will Purdue or the Big Ten suspend senior guard Zach Reckman for throwing an elbow/fist at Northern Illinois' Sean Progar at the end of the Huskies' 28-21 win at Purdue? A precedent seems to have been set last week when the Big Ten suspended Michigan linebacker Jonas Mouton for its game against Eastern Michigan after he punched a Notre Dame player. Mouton wasn't penalized during the Notre Dame game for the punch. Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez said he will ask the Big Ten to punish any player for a non-football act after Mouton was banned.
'Huskers Lee sits practice
Nebraska QB Zac Lee didn't practice Monday, but it had nothing to do with a splint Lee had on his left (non-throwing) thumb, according to HuskersIlustrated.com. Rather, Husker coach Bo Pelini said Lee was held out because of medication he took and is expected to start this Saturday against Louisiana-Lafayette. If for some reason Lee couldn't play, 6-4, 220-pound true freshman Cody Green would take over.
