Stanzi would be out for the rest of the regular season but may be able to play in a bowl game. Iowa plays at Ohio State this Saturday before finishing the year at home against Minnesota.
Stanzi was hurt in the first quarter of the Northwestern game after he was sacked by Corey Wootton. Stanzi had staked Iowa to a 10-0 lead, but the Hawkeyes failed to score the rest of the game behind redshirt freshman James Vandenberg. It was Iowa's first loss of the season following a 9-0 start. Redshirt freshman John Wienke is the backup.
Stanzi is the No. 6 rated passer in the Big Ten, throwing for 2,186 yards with 15 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.
UK QB quandary?
With junior Mike Hartline seemingly primed to return from an injury, Kentucky may have a quarterback controversy on its hands.
Hartline, who started the first five games, has been cleared to practice this week after being out since injuring his left knee in a 28-26 loss at South Carolina on Oct. 10. True freshman Morgan Newton has started the last four games and been impressive, leading the Wildcats to a 3-1 record that includes a victory at Auburn.
So, who will get the start when the Wildcats play at Vanderbilt on Saturday?
"We'll just have to judge and see," Kentucky coach Rich Brooks said at his weekly press conference. "I'm certainly not going to put Mike Hartline out there if he can't get out of his own way, let alone pull the ball down and run it if he has to. Having said that he's looked pretty last week, ran around [Sunday] and it bothered him a little bit but we feel like he'll be ready to go through a full practice [Tuesday] and see how it goes after that."
At 5-4, Kentucky needs one more victory to become bowl eligible. After playing at Vanderbilt, the Wildcats travel to Georgia before finishing at home against Tennessee.
ASU mulling quarterback move?
A quarterback change could be brewing at Arizona State.
Senior Danny Sullivan was pulled from last week's 14-9 loss to USC. Brock Osweller took over and showed some flashes. The 6-foot-8, 237-pound true freshman engineered the Sun Devils' lone touchdown against the Trojans.
"I haven't made a decision on what I'm going to do yet," ASU coach Dennis Erickson said at his news conference. "We've talked about it. There's things that you got to think about …. We're going to make that decision probably in the next couple of days."
Sullivan completed 12 of 23 passes for 113 yards with two interceptions against USC before giving way to Osweller, who played the second half and completed 11 of 27 passes for 153 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
"Danny did not play as bad as everyone might have thought," Erickson said. "He made some good throws. It's not that he went in there and played so bad that [I had] to yank him. I made the change because I wanted to get some energy on offense, which Brock brought to us."
Arizona State's bowl hopes are slipping away. The Sun Devils are 4-5, have lost three games in a row and play at Oregon this week. A trip to UCLA follows the Oregon game with the season ending at home against Arizona.
