Newcastle has reached an agreement to sign Montpellier midfielder Remy Cabella in the summer, according to la Paillade president Laurent Nicollin.
The attacking midfielder has featured 20 times in Ligue 1 this season for Rolland Courbis’ side and is the club’s top scorer with six goals.
Cabella had been expected to move to St James Park during this transfer window but Nicollin insists that the two clubs have a deal for a summer move.
"We have an agreement with the leaders of Newcastle that I will not reveal," Nicollin told Midi Libre.
"But it does not include a departure for Remy before June, it is a certainty."
Cabella has spent his whole career with Montpellier having come through the club’s youth academy, and has scored 15 times in 68 league appearances.
A move to Tyneside would mean a reunion with former Montpellier defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, who joined the Magpies from the French club a year ago.
Newcastle has appeared to be the favorite to sign Cabella in recent weeks after Manchester United and Arsenal were both previously reported to be interested.
The former France Under-21 international has been touted as a long-term replacement for Yohan Cabaye, who continues to be linked with a move away from Newcastle.
