Newcastle boss Pardew wants positive response against Manchester City
Alan Pardew is hoping Newcastle United can put its derby defeat to Sunderland behind it in its Capital One Cup clash with Manchester City.

The Magpies welcome Manuel Pellegrini's side to St James' Park on Wednesday night following a 2-1 loss to their bitter rivals at the Stadium of Light last Sunday.

Pardew, still adamant his side deserved something from the game, is looking for the team to bounce back against City, and is hoping to progress as far as possible in the competition.

"I genuinely believe we were the better team, but we got beat," he told reporters. "But it is a result that carries a great deal of emotion in this city and you have to accept it.

"This year [the Capital One Cup] is a priority because we want to win a trophy for our fans. It will be a good way of putting behind the disappointment of Sunderland against Man City. If we can get past Man City, but that is easier said than done."

The result at Sunderland has only increased the pressure on owner Mike Ashley, who has seen fans protest against his regime, but Pardew, who spoke to Ashley after the 2-1 defeat, insists the owner does have the best interests of the club at heart.

"We had a brief message to each other," he added. "But it was all in the right manner. He wants to win and so do I."

Newcastle is currently in 11th place in the Premier League table following the defeat to Sunderland, but is only three points above the relegation zone.
