Nebraska QB Martinez to miss second straight game

Redshirt freshman quarterback Tommy Armstrong will start at quarterback in place of injured Taylor Martinez in Nebraska's Big Ten opener against Illinois, coach Bo Pelini announced after Thursday's practice.

Pelini said fifth-year senior quarterback Ron Kellogg III also will play against the Fighting Illini on Saturday.

"We'll start Tommy, Ronnie will be ready to go and Taylor will not play," Pelini said, according to Omaha World Herald.

Martinez missed the Cornhuskers' previous game against South Dakota State on Sept. 21 -- ending a streak of 32 consecutive starts -- because of turf toe. The mobile senior is closer to returning but has not fully recovered.

"I'm not telling him he can't play," Pelini said. "Like I said, to be able to play and function in our offense -- do what you have to do -- he's got to able to put his foot in the ground and feel comfortable doing that."

Armstrong completed 12 of 15 passes for 169 yards and a touchdown against FCS opponent South Dakota State and Kellogg was 8 of 9 for 136 yards and a touchdown while subbing for Martinez in Nebraska's 59-20 victory.
