NCAA: Miami deflecting attention from allegations

The University of Miami is passing the buck regarding its motion to dismiss the Nevin Shapiro case, according to a report filed by the NCAA's enforcement department.

CBS Sports on Monday obtained parts of the 42-page report, which read: "From the enforcement's staff perspective the motion to dismiss by the institution and involved individuals are attempts to deflect attention from the significant allegations that remain in the case."

Miami, as well as four former assistant coaches no longer with the school, filed the motion on March 29.

Shapiro, a former Miami booster, was accused of lavishing extra benefits to school recruits and players. He is currently serving a 20-year sentence for his role in a $900 million Ponzi scheme.

The school claims that NCAA investigators lied and misled witnesses during its investigation of the Shapiro case.

Miami self-imposed a two-year bowl ban and suspended players when the violations were first reported two years ago. The NCAA charged the school with a lack of institutional control.

Miami officials might appear at an NCAA infractions committee hearing in June and additional penalties could follow.
