Although he's currently recovering from injury, there aren't a ton of players around the league like Rondo, and Ainge seems to understand this. Along with a decent number of quality surrounding players, the Celtics could certainly be in worse shape.
Still, trade rumors surrounding Rondo are inevitable. There's still the notion amongst certain people that he was a product of Hall of Fame teammates, and won't be able to carry a team when he's the featured player. Additionally, as we know, Danny Ainge isn't scared to pull the trigger on a big move.
When the Houston Rockets signed center Dwight Howard this offseason, there was talk of what exactly the team would do with Omer Asik. There's plenty of redundancy between the two players, although Houston insists on playing the pair together for the time being. Although they're both game-changing defensive players, their offensive limitations make the combination less than ideal. Oh, not to mention, Asik will make about $20 million over the next two years, according to HoopHype.
Now, there's some speculation about a potential swap between the Rockets and Celtics, according to Sam Smith on NBA.com. Smith suggests a Rondo for Asik deal that would certainly create some noise around the league.
Smith brings up a legitimate point: Will the Celtics be realistic contenders by 2015, when Rondo's contract expires? Probably not. If so, what exactly will keep Rondo in town when plenty of other teams will be begging for his services? If the trend of superstars wanting to play together continues, a facilitator with championship experience like Rondo will be in high demand.
Still, getting Asik simply would not be nearly enough. He's a nice player, but Asik isn't on Rondo's level. Boston would most likely look to flip Asik to another team in hope for assets, as he simply doesn't help the team's long term plans. There doesn't seem to be any reason for Ainge to pull the trigger on such a deal.
This appears to be just speculation, and nothing more. Danny Ainge isn't dumb enough to trade Rajon Rondo for Omer Asik.
