NBA roundup: Rockets' Beverley out indefinitely

The SportsXchange

Houston Rockets starting point guard Patrick Beverley has a torn meniscus in his right knee and is out indefinitely, coach Kevin McHale confirmed Friday.

Beverley was injured during Thursday's win over the Philadelphia 76ers. The injury was initially called a sprain.

The timeline for recovery is unclear because a decision has not been made as to whether Beverley will have the meniscus repaired or removed. A removal has a shorter recovery time.

A return in time for the playoffs in three weeks is a best-case scenario, if Beverley has the meniscus removed. However, there is a greater risk of having long-term damage if he chooses that route.

Having it repaired could take four to six months to recover.

The Rockets are still waiting for an update on center Dwight Howard's injured left ankle.

---Brooklyn Nets guard Jorge Gutierrez was fined $15,000 for making excessive contact above the shoulders with Charlotte Bobcats center Cody Zeller, the NBA announced.

The incident occurred with 6:42 left in the fourth quarter of Wednesday's game. Gutierrez was assessed a Flagrant 2 foul and ejected from the contest. The host Bobcats won the game 116-111.

---The Sacramento Kings signed forward-center Willie Reed for the remainder of the season, the team announced.

Reed was to immediately report to the Reno Bighorns of the NBA Development League.
