NBA roundup: Kings hire Mullin as adviser

The Sacramento Kings hired Hall of Famer Chris Mullin as adviser to the chairman, the team announced Thursday.

Mullin, 50, will advise owner and chairman Vivek Ranadive and general manager Pete D'Alessandro in basketball operations responsibilities, including player transactions and apprising front office and coaching personnel of the team's collegiate and professional scouting efforts.

Mullin, a five-time All-Star and two-time Olympian, was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011. In his NBA playing career with the Golden State Warriors (1985-97 and 2000-01) and Indiana Pacers (1997-2000), Mullin averaged 18.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.60 steals and 32.6 minutes in 986 games.

---The Los Angeles Lakers signed free agent guard Xavier Henry, the team announced.

Henry, the No. 12 pick in the 2010 draft out of Kansas, averaged 3.9 points, 1.8 rebounds and 0.3 assists in 12.5 minutes over 50 games last season for the New Orleans Hornets (now Pelicans).

He was drafted by the Memphis Grizzlies and was traded to New Orleans in January 2012.

---The Charlotte Bobcats signed free agent forward James Southerland, the team announced.

Southerland, an undrafted rookie out of Syracuse, averaged 13.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and shot 39.8 percent from 3-point range his senior year. He averaged 7.9 points and 3.3 rebounds, and shot 44.9 percent -- including 37 percent on 3s -- over his collegiate career.

Southerland played for the Philadelphia 76ers' Summer League team in Orlando and the Golden State Warriors' Summer League squad in Las Vegas.
