NEW YORK – Steve Nash sounds interested in listening to all his suitors when he officially becomes a free agent on Sunday.
Nash is expected to be courted by the Phoenix Suns, New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets, Toronto Raptors and Dallas Mavericks, league sources said. Nash does have New York connections: He lives here during the offseason and hosted his annual charity soccer game here Wednesday.
"You can go down the line of teams and possibilities and you can list a bunch of pros," Nash said. "But it will be interesting to see what actually transpires on [Sunday] and see how they rank in my mind."
The Knicks already hope to re-sign restricted free agent point guard Jeremy Lin. Nash said Lin’s presence won't keep him from considering the Knicks. The Knicks, however, are over the salary cap and could need a sign-and-trade with the Suns to land Nash.
When asked if the Knicks or Nets were a better option, Nash said: "Right now the Knicks. Maybe in the few years the Nets."
The Nets have salary-cap space to sign Nash and keep Deron Williams. The Nets would welcome the two point guards playing together, a league source said. Nash and Nets coach Avery Johnson are former teammates. Nash also is intrigued by the Nets’ new arena and their move to Brooklyn.
"I have friends in Brooklyn," Nash said. "I’m over there a lot. Brooklyn’s great. Brooklyn’s beautiful. I think a lot of guys are going to find out about Brooklyn."
Nash, 38, has played 10 seasons with the Suns, including the last eight. He hasn’t ruled out returning to the franchise.
"Phoenix has been home for 10 years," Nash said. "It’s a very important place for me. I'm a Phoenix Sun. I still am to this day. It's definitely still possible. We'll see what happens."
A native of Vancouver, British Columbia, Nash was recently named general manager of Canada’s national team. He called the possibility of playing in his home country for the Raptors "exciting."
"They’re trying to move the game forward in Canada and help that franchise move forward," Nash said.
