Kendrick Perkins reinjures hip; questionable to play Game 2

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City Thunder don't know whether center Kendrick Perkins will play in Wednesday's Game 2 against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Perkins aggravated his right hip strain early in the second half of the Thunder's Game 1 victory. He eventually returned to the bench, but coach Scott Brooks opted not to use him the rest of the game with the Thunder winning handily.

Perkins’ hip tightened overnight. He didn’t practice Tuesday and received treatment twice. Brooks expects to have a better idea on Perkins’ status during Wednesday morning's shootaround.

“Perk put himself in a great position to play last night,” Brooks said. “It’s one of those things where you can’t predict what will happen during the game. He just re-aggravated the injury. Going into it, if we thought that was the case, we wouldn’t have played him.

“We will see how he feels tomorrow. One of the things we know about Perk is he is as tough as they come. If they were ever to do an ‘Avengers 2’ he would be one of the characters.”

Brooks said the Thunder will start Nazr Mohammed if Perkins can’t play. Mohammed started only one game in the regular season. He had seven points, four rebounds, two blocks and three fouls in 22 minutes in Game 1 against the Lakers.

“Nazr has great experience,” Brooks said. “He’s played on a championship team [with the San Antonio Spurs] and played important minutes throughout his career. He never had to play a lot of minutes for us because all of our players have been pretty much healthy throughout the year. But he’s in shape, he’s been working and he’s ready to go if we need extended minutes."
