Trade discussions that would have sent Los Angeles Angels right-hander Dan Haren to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for reliever Carlos Marmol died Friday night and the Angels declined to exercise Haren's $15.5 million option for 2013, making the starting pitcher a free agent.

Numerous outlets reported the teams had agreed to the trade, and Marmol appeared willing to waive his no-trade clause to finalize it.

"I like Anaheim," Marmol told a newspaper, El Caribe, in his native Dominican Republic. "They have talent and they'll give me an opportunity."

Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto, who this week traded Ervin Santana, also declined to extend a qualifying offer to outfielder Torii Hunter. He hopes to clear enough payroll space to re-sign right-hander Zack Greinke.

Haren pitched a sturdy season-and-a-half for the Angels after being acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks at the 2010 trading deadline. He was not similarly effective in 2012, however, when a sore back sapped his velocity and command. He threw 60 fewer innings than he had the season before and his ERA jumped nearly 1½ runs. The innings (176 2/3) were the lowest and ERA (4.33) the highest since he became a regular starter in 2005.
