Nationals match Yankees for baseball's best record

The Washington Nationals won their sixth consecutive game Thursday night, an 8-2 rout of the Brewers in Milwaukee. That win pushed Washington to 20 games over .500 at 59-39 and tied them with the New York Yankees for the best record in the major leagues.

In the end, manager Davey Johnson said it really doesn't mean anything. There are still 64 games remaining, but the Nationals have a five-game lead over the Atlanta Braves in the NL East and have put themselves in this position despite dealing with a huge number of injuries.

They've lost Ryan Zimmerman, Michael Morse, Drew Storen, Ian Desmond, Wilson Ramos, Chien-Ming Wang and others for long stretches on the disabled list.

The Nationals are likely to lose starter Stephen Strasburg in about a month when he reaches his innings limit, but they're still deep in the rotation.

Despite all of the injuries, Washington hasn't missed a beat, and now the team is healing up, which could be bad news for the rest of the National League.

That's why the skipper was happy to hear his team was tied for the best record in baseball.

"Those guys deserve it," Johnson said. "They've hung in there when times were really tough. Shoot, we've earned it."
