Nationals' Fister hurt again

The SportsXchange

Washington Nationals right-hander Doug Fister left a minor-league rehab start Thursday with a right lat strain.

Fister was slow to get started in spring training and missed a start in early March due to elbow inflammation. Fister is scheduled to be reevaluated when the Nationals return to Washington this weekend.

Manager Matt Williams said last week Fister should be able to make his first start of the season in April barring setbacks such as the one encountered Thursday.

While Fister remains a concern, the Nationals have the pitching depth to survive if his latest injury requires a stint on the disabled list. Taylor Jordan and Tanner Roark were competing for the fifth spot in the rotation -- Washington planned to pitch them in a head-to-head situation Saturday before a final decision was made -- but both figure to get at least one start.

Fister was acquired from the Detroit Tigers in an offseason trade. He was 14-9 with a 3.67 ERA in 32 starts and one appearance out of the bullpen in 2013.
