WASHINGTON -- Washington shortstop Ian Desmond blasted the first pitch from Atlanta Braves starter Alex Wood in the last of the seventh for a leadoff home run to left field to break a 1-1 tie and the Nationals won 2-1 Sunday to salvage the final game of the three-game set.

The Braves had won nine of the previous 11 games at Nationals Park against Washington, which was 6-13 last season against the National League East champions.

Atlanta second baseman Dan Uggla had tied the game at 1 in the sixth on a long sacrifice fly to center to score first baseman Freddie Freeman, who led off the inning with a single and went to third on a double by third baseman Chris Johnson.

Washington reliever Tyler Clippard, taking over for winner Jerry Blevins (1-0), got the last two outs of the eighth. Nationals closer Rafael Soriano pitched the ninth for his first save of the year as he fanned right fielder Jason Heyward for the final out with two runners on base.

Washington starter Taylor Jordan pitched into the seventh and allowed just six hits and one run. Jordan, who made his first appearance of 2014, was 1-3 with an ERA of 3.66 last season.

Wood (1-1), the left-handed starter for Atlanta, gave up four hits and two runs.

The Nationals took a 1-0 lead in the first when third baseman Anthony Rendon scored on a throwing error by Johnson on an infield single by right fielder Jayson Werth. Rendon began the game with a bunt single down the third-base line and went to second on a single by left fielder Kevin Frandsen.

NOTES: Washington OF Scott Hairston was put on the 15-day DL with a left oblique strain and the Nationals recalled 1B/OF Tyler Moore from Triple-A Syracuse. Moore hit .265 in 49 at-bats for Washington in spring training and was hitless in four at-bats in his only game with Syracuse. Moore is a career .241 hitter in 138 at-bats with the Nationals with 14 homers. ... Nationals 3B Ryan Zimmerman, who left Saturday's game with a sore shoulder, was not in the starting lineup. Manager Matt Williams said on the Nats' radio network before the game that Zimmerman was available to pinch-hit but would not play in the field. "He had an MRI this morning," Williams said. "He is sore but he is able to hit. It is a concern. He has such a history with that (throwing) shoulder." ... Atlanta began the day with a team ERA of 1.43, the best mark in the majors. ... RHP Ervin Santana, who signed with the Braves on March 12, is slated to start Wednesday against the Mets. He went 5.1 innings and allowed five earned runs for Triple-A Gwinnett on Friday in a 12-7 win over Durham.
