National League notebook -- Sunday, May 13, 2012

Arizona: SS Stephen Drew (ankle) slid in pregame work Saturday afternoon, the first time he had done any sliding since sustaining a season-ending fractured ankle and ligament damage when his spikes caught in the dirt on a play at the plate on July 20, 2011. Drew was scheduled to play nine innings in extended spring training games Tuesday and Thursday. ... CF Chris Young (shoulder) was scheduled to begin a three-game rehab assignment at high-A Visalia (Calif.) today and possibly rejoin the D-backs later this week.

Atlanta: 3B Chipper Jones (right foot pain) did not start Sunday against the Cardinals, but he went 0-for-1 as a pinch-hitter. Jones was a little banged up Saturday after fouling a ball off his instep in the fifth inning and experiencing numbness in his hand after fouling off a pitch in the ninth. ... RHP Brandon Beachy gave his mom an early Mother's Day gift by hurling six innings of one-run, two-hit ball in Atlanta's 7-2 win over St. Louis on Saturday night. His parents made the trek from Kokomo, Ind., to watch another strong outing from their son, who lowered his ERA to 1.60.

Chicago: RH reliever Carlos Marmol (right hamstring) was placed on the disabled list Saturday, and RH reliever Casey Coleman was recalled from Class AAA (Des Moines) Iowa. Marmol, who had lost his job as closer and had been working in middle relief and setup roles, was injured Friday. The Cubs said an MRI showed no significant damage. ... LF Alfonso Soriano has not homered this season and has a slugging percentage of .304. "The fact of the matter is fastballs are getting too deep," manager Dale Sveum said. "Whatever it is, it's a strange phenomenon right now."

Cincinnati: 3B Todd Frazier started at third base for the second consecutive game after Scott Rolen (strained left shoulder) was placed on the disabled list Saturday. Frazier has made six starts at third base this season and 30 in his two-year career. Frazier and veteran Miguel Cairo should get the bulk of the work at third in Rolen's absence. ... Saturday's 2-1 loss to Washington guaranteed the Reds their first series loss in their last seven. ... SS Zack Cozart (10-for-36 during his previous nine games) wasn't in Sunday's starting lineup. Manager Dusty Baker is trying to guide his regulars through a stretch of 20 games in 20 days.

Colorado: The forearm tightness that forced LHP Jorge De La Rosa out of his third rehab start Saturday after one inning is not cause for concern, the Rockies believe. De La Rosa, who underwent Tommy John surgery June 3 and made his first two rehab starts for high-A Modesto (Calif.), is scheduled to make one more start for Class AA Tulsa and two for Class AAA Colorado Springs, and he could start for the Rockies on June 2 against the Dodgers. ... SS Troy Tulowitzki was dropped from fourth to fifth in the lineup, the first time he has hit lower than cleanup this season. Tulowitzki batted third April 14-16 when Carlos Gonzalez was out with strep throat.

Houston: LF J.D. Martinez was back in the lineup after three days of rest. He spent the time off "getting back to the basics, getting that trigger back and being confident," Martinez said. "You start getting into situations where you start doubting yourself, and the way to get confidence is to go out and start hitting balls hard." However, he went 0-for-4 to extend his slump to 1-for-35. ... IF Marwin Gonzalez got his first start since April 24. The Rule 5 pick replaced 2B Jose Altuve, who leads the team in starts. Gonzalez went 0-for-4.

Los Angeles: CF Matt Kemp (left hamstring) pulled up lame after running out a groundball in the third inning and left the game. Kemp, who has played in 399 consecutive games, first injured the leg May 5 and missed a start May 6, when he kept the streak going by pinch-hitting. ... LHP Ted Lilly allowed three first-inning runs to the Rockies. Since joining the Dodgers in August 2010, Lilly had allowed three runs in 23 innings over three previous starts against the Rockies at Dodger Stadium. ... OF Tony Gwynn Jr. drove in the winning run with a pinch-hit RBI single Saturday night, the second time in three games that Gwynn delivered the eventual winning run with a pinch hit. Gwynn has two singles and a triple in his last three pinch-hit at-bats.

Miami: SS Jose Reyes raised his average to .260 after going 1-for-2 with two walks a day after he had his first four-hit game for the Marlins. "I'm still not quite where I want to be, but it's getting close," said Reyes, who batted .337 last year with the Mets to win the National League batting title. ... C Brett Hayes said he will have to make a change after being called for catcher's interference Saturday for the second time this season. Asked the last time that has happened to him twice in the same season, Hayes replied: "Little League? Now I have two in three weeks. Obviously, I'll have to make an adjustment."

Milwaukee: 2B Rickie Weeks (severely bruised left hand) was out of the lineup for the second consecutive game Sunday. Weeks was hit by a pitch in the 13th inning Friday against Chicago. ... C Jonathan Lucroy was batting .471 during a nine-game hitting streak before going 0-for-4 Sunday. He still is hitting .326 overall.

New York: 1B Ike Davis (flu-like symptoms) was a late scratch. OF Lucas Duda and C Mike Nickeas have missed games recently because of the flu. ... 2B Daniel Murphy made his starting debut at first base, replacing Davis. Murphy played first base regularly last year when Davis was on the disabled list, but he had played second base exclusively this season until Sunday.

Philadelphia: 1B Ty Wigginton stranded nine runners on base in the Phillies' 2-1 loss to the Padres on Saturday. After going 1-for-4 Sunday, Wigginton is 2-for-24 with 10 strikeouts in his last nine games. ... RHP Roy Halladay is in the midst of a three-game losing streak, which ties a career high. The Phillies have not won in Halladay's last five starts. It's the first time Halladay's team has lost five of his starts in a row since the Blue Jays did so in Halladay's rookie season, 1999.

Pittsburgh: LHP Erik Bedard, who left his May 9 start after one inning because of back spasms, had his next start pushed back to Wednesday. RHP Brad Lincoln will start today instead. ... RH reliever Daniel McCutchen strained a pectoral muscle during pitchers' batting practice and was placed on the disabled list. McCutchen had been recalled from Class AAA Indianapolis to replace RH reliever Joel Hanrahan (bereavement list), who returned Sunday.

St. Louis: 1B Lance Berkman (left calf) was activated after more than three weeks on the disabled list. He went 1-for-5 with three strikeouts. OF Shane Robinson, who hit .311 and played well in the outfield as a backup, was optioned to Class AAA Memphis. ... LF Matt Holliday, the only regular to have started the first 33 games, got his first day off. Allen Craig made his first start in left and went 3-for-5 with a three-run homer. ... SS Rafael Furcal went 3-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to 12 games, during which he is hitting .510 (25-for-49).

San Diego: 1B Yonder Alonso's career-best nine-game hitting streak ended. He was 15-for-36 during the streak. He still has hit safely in 14 of his last 16 games (23-for-60). ... C Nick Hundley was 0-for-4 as his average fell to .178. Hundley, who started the season 0-for-21, is in a 3-for-42 drought, meaning he has sandwiched a 15-for-38, 10-game hot streak with a 3-for-63. ... Padres pinch-hitters were 1-for-3 but still lead the major leagues with a .358 average (19-for-53). When not pinch-hitting, the Padres are batting .214.

San Francisco: IF Charlie Culberson was promoted from Class AAA Fresno and made his major league debut Sunday at second base, a trouble spot for the Giants (Freddy Sanchez and Ryan Theriot are on the DL, and Emmanuel Burriss has been inconsistent). Culberson got his first major league hit, a single in the fifth inning. ... 3B Conor Gillaspie was optioned to Fresno to make room for Culberson. The Giants had hoped Gillaspie would fit in at third while 3B Pablo Sandoval recovers from hamate surgery, but IF Joaquin Arias has assumed the everyday duties at third. ... LH reliever Jeremy Affeldt (right knee sprain) was activated from the disabled list, and LH reliever Travis Blackley was designated for assignment.

Washington: C Wilson Ramos tore the ACL in his right knee Saturday while reaching awkwardly for a passed ball. He will have surgery and likely will miss the rest of the season. ... C Sandy Leon was recalled from Class AA Harrisburg (Pa.). He's a good defensive catcher who had a .319 average and had thrown out 41 percent of runners attempting to steal. He will back up C Jesus Flores.
