National League notebook -- Sunday, July 1, 2012

Arizona: LF Jason Kubel led the National League with 27 RBI in June. It was the best month of his career. C Miguel Montero was fourth in the NL with 20 RBI in June, and 2B Aaron Hill tied for seventh with 20. ... LHP Joe Saunders (shoulder inflammation) threw 50 pitches in a bullpen session Saturday and is scheduled to throw a simulated game Tuesday. The Diamondbacks expect Saunders to make one rehab start before returning, so RHP Trevor Bauer likely will remain in the rotation through the All-Star break.

Atlanta: RH reliever Peter Moylan (shoulder surgery) pitched one scoreless inning with a strikeout and two groundball outs Saturday in his first rehab game with the Braves' rookie-level Gulf Coast League affiliate. He is expected to have three outings this week. ... OF Martin Prado (right leg soreness) is attributing his injury to not hydrating enough.

Chicago: 3B Ian Stewart (sore left wrist) may be headed for surgery. He has been on the disabled list since June 14. ... RHP Ryan Dempster (sore right lat muscle) was scheduled to throw off the mound Monday. He will not return until after the All-Star break.

Cincinnati: 1B Joey Votto was out of the lineup Sunday for only the second time all season. Votto left Saturday's game with inflammation in his left knee, which he injured sliding into third base on Friday. "It's progressing," he said. ... 3B Scott Rolen had back spasms during Zack Cozart's leadoff at-bat Sunday. Todd Frazier replaced him. Because Rolen was scratched after the game had started, he was not eligible to pinch-hit.

Colorado: LHP Drew Pomeranz was recalled from Class AAA Colorado Springs to start Sunday, and RHP Guillermo Moscoso was sent down. Pomeranz dropped to 0-3 despite not allowing an earned run. The Padres scored one unearned run off him as he gave up two hits and three walks in six innings. ... The Rockies had the worst June in their history, going 9-18. That ties for the fewest victories in that month. They went 9-17 in June 2004.

Houston: 1B Carlos Lee is part of an agreed-upon trade to the Dodgers that requires his approval. He said he wanted to decide by Sunday, but he played for the Astros, going 1-for-4 in a 3-0 loss to the Cubs. ... 3B Chris Johnson (strained lat muscle) was scratched from Sunday's game. Matt Downs started at third and went 0-for-3.

Los Angeles: CF Matt Kemp (strained hamstring) will begin a minor league rehab assignment with high-A Rancho Cucamonga (Calif.) on Tuesday. Kemp, who has played two games since May 14, expects to return July 13, the Dodgers' first game after the All-Star break. ... RH reliever Javy Guerra, who had arthroscopic right knee surgery June 5, was scheduled to begin a rehab assignment Sunday night with Rancho Cucamonga. He is expected to pitch again Tuesday and be activated Thursday.

Miami: RH reliever Edward Mujica (fractured right small toe) was placed on the disabled list Saturday. The team called up LH reliever Wade LeBlanc from Class AAA New Orleans (Metairie, La.). Mujica was hit on the foot by a grounder in Friday's game. Manager Ozzie Guillen said he hopes Mujica can return shortly after the All-Star break. ... Guillen said the impending return of CF Emilio Bonifacio from the DL doesn't mean OF Justin Ruggiano will be coming out of the lineup. "I will find him playing time, believe me," Guillen said of Ruggiano, who is hitting .389 after going 1-for-3 Sunday.

Milwaukee: RHP Mike Fiers became the 11th Brewers rookie to strike out at least 10 hitters in a game when he struck out 10 in six innings Saturday night against Arizona. ... SS Cody Ransom drove in four runs Saturday night in a 10-2 victory over Arizona, matching his career high. Ransom previously drove in four runs for San Francisco against Arizona on Sept. 3, 2004.

New York: 1B Ike Davis has picked key spots to do most of his damage at the plate this season. Entering Sunday, seven of his 11 home runs had come with at least two men on base, giving him 45 RBI to go with a .204 batting average. Since June 9, Davis was batting .333 (21-for-63) with 14 runs scored, seven doubles, six home runs and 24 RBI. ... LF Jason Bay (concussion) is scheduled to run and hit off a tee Tuesday. He will be evaluated by doctors afterward, and the team will decide on a rehabilitation schedule.

Philadelphia: OF Jason Pridie was called up to replace 1B Jim Thome, who was traded to Baltimore on Saturday. Pridie, who appeared in 101 games with the New York Mets last season, was hitting .370 in 13 games at Class AAA Lehigh Valley (Allentown, Pa.). He sat out the first 50 games of the season while serving a suspension for violating the MLB drug policy. ... RHP Roy Halladay threw off flat ground Sunday, two days after his first bullpen session since landing on the disabled list on May 29 with a right lat strain. Halladay said he hopes to rejoin the Phillies shortly after the All-Star break.

Pittsburgh: CF Andrew McCutchen (left wrist sprain) fell awkwardly while making a diving catch Saturday. X-rays were negative, and McCutchen said the wrist was "fine." He sat out Sunday and was to be evaluated again Monday in Pittsburgh. ... RHP James McDonald was the most glaring All-Star snub. His 2.44 ERA ranks ninth in the majors, and his 0.98 WHIP is tied for sixth. He has given up more than three runs just once all season (that was four), making for the best first half in that category in the franchise's 126-year history.

San Diego: C Yasmani Grandal homered from both sides of the plate Saturday for his first two hits in his first major league start. According to Elias Sports Bureau, that's the first time that has happened. ... C Nick Hundley, who was hitting .166 (32-for-193) with three homers and 22 RBI, was optioned to Class AAA Tucson to clear a roster spot for Grandal. ... SS Alexi Amarista also hit two home runs Saturday. Both he and Grandal are 23. Saturday marked only the fifth time in major league history that two hitters on the same team under the age of 24 have homered twice in the same game.

San Francisco: 1B Aubrey Huff will begin a rehab assignment with high-A San Jose on Wednesday. Huff went on the disabled list after spraining his knee June 13 when he fell jumping over the dugout railing to celebrate Matt Cain's perfect game. Huff won't return until after the All-Star break, manager Bruce Bochy said. ... RHP Brad Penny, called up from Class AAA Fresno on Friday, made his Giants debut Saturday and worked 2 1/3 perfect innings. He entered the game in the seventh with men at the corners and two outs and struck out OF Ryan Ludwick.

Washington: RHP Stephen Strasburg was removed from Saturday's game with dehydration/heat exhaustion after three innings. It was 104 degrees at game time in Atlanta. He felt much improved the next day. ... RF Michael Morse (sore hamstring) has been getting treatment and will keep playing through his injury. ... RH reliever Drew Storen (elbow surgery) and 3B Chad Tracy (groin muscle surgery) both could be ready to return to the team after the All-Star break.
