N.C. State suspends leading rusher

North Carolina State's leading rusher this season was charged with misdemeanor drug possession and suspended indefinitely from the team, the school announced Thursday.

University police were visiting the apartment of running back Shadrach Thornton and safety J.J. Jones to follow up on a sexual battery investigation. Both were charged with simple possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Thornton is named as a suspect on the battery case. No charges have been filed, but Thornton is receiving counseling in a deal with the court to defer prosecution for the alleged assault on a woman in June.

Thornton, a sophomore, rushed for 768 yards and four touchdowns in 11 games this season. He also led the Wolfpack in rushing last season with 694 yards.

Jones earlier announced that he is transferring.
