Moustakas shut down due to groin injury

Mike Moustakas tried to play through a groin injury, but it was not meant to be.

The Kansas City Royals third baseman exited Sunday's game at Cleveland with a left groin strain. On Monday, he pronounced himself "fine" and was in the lineup against the Detroit Tigers.

Moustakas, however, aggravated the groin on a slide into second base in the sixth inning. He stayed in the game and struck out in the eighth but was replaced in the ninth.

He was not in the lineup Tuesday. Irving Falu replaced him at third and went 1-for-4 in the Royals' 4-2 win over the Tigers. Moustakas also won't play in the Wednesday finale.

"Moose is done," Kansas City manager Ned Yost said.

Moustakas finishes his first full season in the majors with a .242 average, a .296 on-base percentage, a .412 slugging percentage, 20 home runs and 73 RBI.

Moustakas hit .263/.309/.367 with five home runs and 30 RBI in 89 games as a rookie in 2011.
