Eight schools will do battle in the Mountain West Conference while week eight shapes up as a moment for the so-called favorites to pull away with the home field advantage. The two worst teams, Colorado State and Hawaii, will not play this week. Here's a brief look at each of the four contests.
UNLV Rebels (1-6 overall, 1-1 in Mountain West) at the #22 Boise State Broncos (5-1, 2-0)
Well, at least the Rebels are more competitive than they've been in the past. Is that enough to save their third-year head coach Bobby Hauck's job? Five wins in two-and-half seasons isn't exactly going to a get a renewal of your contract - but it will put Hauck on the hot seat. Oh, the game will see the Broncos win easily on the smurf turf in Boise - say three touchdowns or more.
New Mexico Lobos (4-3, 1-1) at the Air Force Academy Falcons (3-3, 2-1)
You like to watch teams run the ball? You're in luck. The Falcons are second in the country at rushing and the Lobos (see related articles) are seventh. But, neither teams' defense will remind anyone of the Monsters of the Midway. This contest in Colorado Springs will likely see one long drive after another but in the end, the Air Force should win by at least a touchdown.
Wyoming Cowboys (1-5, 0-2) at the Fresno State Bulldogs (4-3, 2-1)
The Cowboys may be the best 1-5 team in the nation but they don't give you any rewards for that. Of course, Wyoming doesn't do well at stopping anyone and the Bulldogs have a good offense. They should roll up a nice two touchdown win over Wyoming in Fresno.
San Diego State Aztecs (4-3, 2-1) at the Nevada Wolf Pack (6-1, 3-0)
Two of the better squads in the league have excellent offenses, especially the Wolf Pack. Nevada has the sixth ranked running team in the nation and they're top 15 nationally in scoring - they have to be because the defense isn't very good. The Aztec's will keep this one close but the Wolf Pack will eke out a less than a touchdown victory in Reno.
The Reno game should be critical towards determining whether San Diego State is a legitimate contender or not. The contest in Colorado Springs is likely an elimination game for the conference title.
All ten teams are back in action the following week.
