The SportsXchange

It went down to the final buzzer, but Mount St. Mary's was able to hold off pesky Maryland-Baltimore County for a 58-55 win Saturday in Emmitsburg, Md.

Trailing for most of the second half, the Retrievers tied the game 53-53 with 1:35 remaining.

After Josh Castellanos made two free throws for the Mountaineers, the Retrievers took a timeout and set up a last shot, but Brian Neller missed a 3-pointer that would have sent the game to overtime.

The Mountaineers (5-6) were led by Kristijan Krajina's 14 points and eight rebounds, while Rashad Whack chipped in 11 points.

Ryan Cook led three Retrievers in double-figures with 12 points, while Chase Plummer had 11 and Brett Roseboro had a double-double, chipping in 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Retrievers (2-11) shot 49 percent (21 of 43), while the Mount shot 41 percent (20 of 49).

After a Ryan Cook 3-pointer put UMBC up 15-11, the Mount scored the next 11 points over a 5-minute span to take a 22-17 lead.

The Retrievers chipped away at the lead, but the Mount went into halftime up 26-25.

The second half mirrored the first, with the game remaining close in the opening minutes, the Mount going on a run, and the Retrievers rallying.

The Retrievers even pulled ahead briefly, and even tied the game late, but could not overtake the Mountaineers.
