Junior swingman Justin Black had 16 points, nine rebounds and five assists, helping fifth-seeded Morgan State beat eighth-seeded Bethune-Cookman 82-71 in the semifinals of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday at Norfolk (Va.) Scope Arena.
Sophomore forward Shaquille Duncan came off the bench to post 17 points and six rebounds for Morgan State (17-14), which will play No. 6 Delaware State or No. 7 North Carolina A&T in Saturday's championship game. Senior forward Dewayne Jackson also had 16 points for the Bears.
Senior guard Kevin Dukes scored 20 points for Bethune-Cookman (14-20).
Morgan State jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game and never trailed in the opening period. Bethune-Cookman cut Morgan State's lead to 27-24 on a 3-pointer by Dukes with 6:03 remaining, but the Bears responded with a 10-2 run to go up 36-27.
The Bears were up 39-31 at halftime and stretched their lead to 15 in the second half. The Wildcats cut the deficit to seven on a couple of occasions late in the game, but they couldn't get any closer.
Morgan State shot 56.6 percent from the field while holding Bethune-Cookman to 38.7 percent.
