Junior swingman Justin Black made big baskets at the end of regulation and overtime, helping fifth-seeded Morgan State beat fourth-seeded Savannah State 64-61 in the quarterfinals of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament on Thursday at Norfolk Scope Arena in Norfolk, Va.
Black scored 20 points for the Bears (16-14), who will play eighth-seeded Bethune-Cookman in Friday's semifinals. Bethune-Cookman advanced to the semifinals after ousting the tournament's top seed with a 70-68 overtime victory against MEAC champion Norfolk State on Wednesday.
In Friday's other semifinal, sixth-seeded Delaware State will play seventh-seeded North Carolina A&T.
Junior guard Deven Williams scored 20 points for Savannah State (19-14).
Morgan State outscored Savannah State 7-2 over the final 1:39 of the first period to take a 35-29 lead at halftime. The Bears extended the lead to 10 early in the second half before the Tigers began to battle back.
The Tigers mounted a 16-2 run to take a 49-45 lead on a free throw by Rashad Hassan with 5:32 to go. They still led by four with less than two minutes remaining in regulation, but Black made two 3-pointers in the last 1:29 to send the game to overtime.
Black scored seven of his team's nine points in overtime, including the go-ahead 3-pointer with 33 seconds to go.
