Morgan State 61, South Carolina State 52

Senior guard Anthony Hubbard came off the bench to score 16 points, leading fifth-seeded Morgan State to a 61-52 victory over No. 12 South Carolina State in the opening round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament on Monday at Norfolk Scope Arena in Norfolk, Va.

Hubbard was one of four players who scored in double figures for Morgan State (15-14), which has won six in a row and nine of its last 10. Senior forward Dewayne Jackson scored 12 points. Junior center Ian Chiles had 10 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore forward Shaquille Duncan had 10 points and five rebounds.

Junior forward Matthew Hezekiah had 17 points and 10 rebounds for South Carolina State (6-24). Freshman guard Darryl Palmer had 11 points, eight rebounds and three assists.

South Carolina State led 32-29 at halftime, but Morgan State started the second half with a 10-0 run to take a 39-34 lead with 14:04 remaining. The Bears never trailed again.

Morgan State shot 43.8 percent while holding the Bulldogs to 34 percent shooting. The Bears advanced to Thursday's semifinals to face fourth-seeded Savannah State, which defeated No. 13 Maryland Eastern Shore 59-44 in another first-round game.
