Fantasy Football 2014:

Montana: Kaepernick can be better

The SportsXchange

Hall of Famer Joe Montana told USA Today that San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has room to improve.

The former 49ers star led the team to four Super Bowl victories. Kaepernick is a win away from a second straight Super Bowl appearance.

The 49ers visit the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday for the NFC championship.

Montana is the only player in league history to win three Super Bowl MVPs.

"I like his mobility and that he's getting the ball downfield," Montana said. "But sometimes he needs to be more accurate in the pocket with pressure.

"The game is changing. Nobody wants to throw with pressure anymore. But the guys who can win in this league are the ones who can make throws from the pocket."

Kaepernick ranked third among quarterbacks with 92 rushes this season. Only the Carolina Panthers' Cam Newton (111) and Seattle's Russell Wilson (96) had more carries.

Montana believes Kaepernick should be more consistent as a passer in the pocket.

"Kaepernick still needs to get better at that," he said. "He'll look and then he's off and running. I still think the thing is the pocket and making those tight throws from the pocket."

Montana also said that Kaepernick's throwing accuracy is an area that needs improvement.

"He'll make some," he said, "but a lot of times guys are wide open and he misses them."

Kaepernick completed 58.4 percent of his passes and had a 91.6 passer rating during the regular season. He was better in 2012 with a 62.4 completion rate and a 98.3 rating.

Montana said he likes the 49ers' chances of getting back to the Super Bowl, especially with wide receiver Michael Crabtree's recent return from an Achilles tendon tear. However, he wants to see more opportunities for running back Frank Gore.

"I think they've got a great opportunity to get back and even win it," he said. "I like their chances with Crabtree back. Now they just need to feed the ball to Gore a little more -- if he doesn't take himself out of the game."

Montana, 57, still lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. His real estate company is involved in a plan to develop a hotel and entertainment venue adjacent to the 49ers' new stadium that opens next season in Santa Clara.
