For Clint Dempsey and Erick Torres, the goals just keep on coming.
A week after notching his first MLS hat trick, Dempsey scored a spectacular first-half free kick and buried the late winner in the Seattle Sounders' 3-2 win over FC Dallas. In addition to making it six goals in just four games played, Dempsey also forced an own goal.
Torres, meanwhile, brought his season tally to five goals as he converted a low cross from Leandro Barrera that gave Chivas USA a 1-1 draw at the Portland Timbers.
For their efforts, Dempsey and Torres have earned spots up top for Goal USA's MLS Team of the Week.
Back-stopping the squad is LA Galaxy goalkeeper Jaime Penedo, who returned from a two-match hiatus to preserve the shutout in a 1-0 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps. Galaxy center back Omar Gonzalez also gets the nod after rallying from recent struggles to snuff a slew of Vancouver attacks. The performance put him alongside Bobby Boswell, who helped hold off a relentless Red Bulls attack in D.C. United's 1-0 triumph and used his head to set up Davy Arnaud's strike.
After returning from a hamstring injury to score the opener in the New England Revolution's 2-0 win over Houston, Kevin Alston grabs one fullback slot. On the opposite side is the Columbus Crew's Waylon Francis, who got forward well throughout a 1-1 draw with the San Jose Earthquakes and notched an assist along the way.
In defensive midfield, the Philadelphia Union's Maurice Edu edges out Real Salt Lake stalwart Kyle Beckerman. In addition to heading home the 90th-minute equalizer, Edu completed 81 percent of his passes and collected 12 recoveries. Will Johnson also makes the cut in central midfield after scoring the opener and dictating the tempo throughout the Timbers' draw with Chivas.
Filling the playmaker role is Columbus' Federico Higuain, who converted Francis' centering feed for his fourth goal of the season and also sparked numerous attacks with his creative distribution. And joining Dempsey and Torres in our three-man front line is Galaxy striker Robbie Keane. A nuisance for Vancouver thoughout the Galaxy's win, Keane got his deserved goal in the second half when he made a savvy run to connect with Stefan Ishizaki's cross.
