Three games into the defense of their first-ever trophy, and the New York Red Bulls are desperate for a win against Chivas USA.
The 2013 Major League Soccer Supporters' Shield holders were soundly defeated in their opening game, losing 4-1 to the Vancouver Whitecaps, and followed that up with 1-1 draws against Colorado and Chicago. Red Bull fans may take solace remembering that last year's side started the season off with a four-game winless run and just one win in its first eight.
While in past seasons, many teams have seen Chivas USA as easy points, the 2014 Goats are off to a respectable start, with four points from three games. The defense is leaky, allowing six goals, but Erick Torres is a genuine threat and an early Golden Boot candidate, and Mauro Rosales remains an excellent playmaker.
Historically, the Red Bulls have struggled against Chivas, winning just three of 14 meetings with six Chivas wins and five draws. New York hasn't beaten Chivas USA since May 2010, its only win over the California side in their last nine MLS meetings.
