Opportunities for the LA Galaxy to deploy a first-choice squad have been scarce in 2013. But lowly D.C. United on Saturday will be subjected to the Galaxy's full complement of firepower.
With designated players Landon Donovan, Robbie Keane and Omar Gonzalez and goalkeeper Jaime Penedo back from international duty, coach Bruce Arena will have a golden opportunity to strengthen his star-studded squad's positioning Saturday at RFK Stadium.
The Galaxy (13-10-4) are third in the Western Conference, just three points up on a Dallas squad that is on the outside looking in at a playoff spot. International call-ups this season have crippled the Galaxy, who saw a three-game winning streak snapped at Colorado last weekend when they fielded a weakened roster.
United (3-19-5), fresh off a loss to Western Conference cellar dweller Chivas USA, will get back international call-ups of its own with Canadians Dwayne De Rosario, Dejan Jakovic and Kyle Porter returning to the fold. After playing 25 minutes off the bench last weekend, midfielder-forward Chris Pontius (hamstring) will be hoping for an increased contribution against the Galaxy.
