MLB rumors, injuries and news roundup for September 12

Another fun day of baseball is in the books. There are only two weeks and two days left in the regular season and not one postseason berth has been clinched. Here is a recap of Friday's news from around the league.

SUSPENSIONS

Marlins: RHP Anthony DeSclafani was suspended three games for intentionally hitting Brewers OF Carlos Gomez with a pitch on Thursday.

Orioles: 1B Chris Davis was suspended 25 games after testing positive for an amphetamine. He admitted to taking Adderall without a theraputic use exemption.

RUMORS & TRANSACTIONS

Angels: Activated LHP Joe Thatcher (ankle) off the 15-day disabled list, the team announced.

Athletics: Activated closer LHP Sean Doolittle (intercostal) off the 15-day disabled list.

Padres: Hired former Astros national crosschecker David Post as a special assistant to the GM, the team announced.

Rays: Signed RHP Neil Wagner to a rare two-year minor league contract. He will spend 2015 rehabbing from Tommy John surgery.

Yankees: Vice president of baseball operations Mark Newman is planning to retire after the season. Owner Hal Steinbrenner is planning a "total evaluation" of the team's player development system and it could lead to a "complete overhaul." (New York Post & New York Daily News)

INJURY UPDATES

Astros: RHP Jesse Crain (biceps, shoulder) is not expected to pitch this season. (Houston Chronicle)

Athletics: C Geovany Soto left Friday's game with back spasms and is day-to-day, the team announced

Cubs: 1B Anthony Rizzo (back) is making progress but is still unlikely to play this weekend, manager Rick Renteria told reporters.

Dodgers: LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu left Friday's start after one inning with shoulder irritation.

Giants: 1B Brandon Belt (concussion) took batting practice on Friday. He can play the field but is not yet ready to hit in games. (San Francisco Chronicle)

Marlins: OF Giancarlo Stanton has contusions, facial fractures and dental damage after being hit in the face by a pitch on Thursday night. He has already left the hospital and returned home.

Nationals: 3B Ryan Zimmerman (hamstring) did some running at about 60 percent on Friday (Washington Post) ... OF Jayson Werth is day-to-day with the flu. (MLB.com)

Rangers: RHP Scott Baker was scratched from Saturday's start with elbow inflammation. (Fort Worth Star Telegram)

Reds: RHP Mat Latos has a bone bruise in his elbow and is unable to pitch. There is no timetable for his return and his season may be over (Cincinnati Enquirer) ... UTIL Skip Schumaker underwent season-ending shoulder surgery, the team announced.

Red Sox: UTIL Brock Holt was diagnosed with a concussion and has not yet been cleared to play, the team announced.

Rockies: LHP Boone Logan underwent successful surgery to remove a bone spur from his elbow, the team announced.

Yankees: X-rays and neurological tests came back clean after 3B Chase Headley was hit in the chin by a pitch on Thursday. He needed some stitches and is day-to-day.
