MLB roundup: Yankees' Teixeira out 10-14 days

The SportsXchange

New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira won't miss the rest of the season, which was the Yankees' fear, but he probably will be out 10 to 14 days with a Grade 1 left calf strain, reported Monday.

An MRI performed Monday revealed the extent of the problem, and Teixeira will be evaluated on a weekly basis.

Teixeira had missed 11 games as a result of that calf injury before returning to action on Saturday. However, he reinjured it during that game.

With Teixeira sidelined, the Yankees have been using Nick Swisher and Steve Pearce at first base.

The Yankees also announced they will recall outfielder Melky Mesa from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

---Reading Phillies slugger Darin Ruf has been called up by the Phillies.

The Phillies purchased Ruf's contract on Monday, rewarding the powerful righty with three weeks in the big leagues. The 38 regular-season home runs Ruf hit with Reading broke the franchise record of 37 set by Ryan Howard in 2004.

Twenty of those homers came in August, tying former Chicago Cubs outfielder Sammy Sosa's professional baseball record for a single month.

---Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Evan Meek was designated for assignment Monday, creating room on the 40-man roster to add right-hander Rick VandenHurk.

VandenHurk had his contract purchased from Triple-A Indianapolis. The Pirates also recalled infielder Chase d'Arnaud and right-hander Bryan Morris.
