MLB roundup: Yankees GM Cashman breaks his ankle
New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman broke his ankle while skydiving, the team reported Monday.
Cashman went skydiving with the Golden Knights of the US Army at Homestead Air Force Base in Florida to help raise awareness for the Wounded Warrior Project. After one parachute jump, Cashman went again. However, he injured his ankle when he landed on the second jump. X-rays revealed a broken right fibula and dislocated right ankle.
Cashman was scheduled to undergo surgery Monday at Broward Health Medical Center.
---Manager Joe Torre named Toronto Blue Jays knuckleballer R.A. Dickey as Team USA's starting pitcher in its opening game of the World Baseball Classic this weekend. The U.S. team opens WBC play with a game against Mexico on Friday at Chase Field in Phoenix.
Torre also said San Francisco Giants right-hander Ryan Vogelsong is scheduled to start Saturday night against Italy and Texas Rangers left-hander Derek Holland will start on Sunday against Canada.
---St. Louis Cardinals Mike Matheny has a ruptured disc in his back that may require surgery, the St. Louis Post Dispatch reported.
According to the report, the rupture has created loose particles near his spine, and those particles are creating pressure on the nerve that is causing pain and numbness. He is scheduled to have an epidural injection to see whether he can work through the pain.
-- Cardinals shortstop Rafael Furcal had his sore right elbow examined by team medical director Dr. George Paletta on Monday, but he plans to get a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday.
If Furcal decides to have Tommy John surgery, he will be lost for the season.
---Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto told reporter that he will play for Team Canada in the World Baseball Classic. Votto was given a spot on the team but wanted to make sure his surgically-repaired left knee was healthy.
However, Canada won't have Chicago White Sox reliever Jesse Crain, who pulled out of the vent because of a strained adductor muscle.
