MLB roundup: Umpire Culbreth suspended two games

The SportsXchange

Umpire Fieldin Culbreth, the crew chief in Thursday's game between the Los Angeles Angels and the Houston Astros in Houston, was suspended for two games and fined by the league for misapplying Baseball Rule 3.05(b) regarding use of pitchers, Major League Baseball announced Friday.

The other members of Culbreth's crew - Brian O'Nora, Bill Welke and Adrian Johnson - have received fines stemming from the same ruling. Culbreth's two-game suspension will be served at a date to be determined by the Office of the Commissioner.

Earlier Friday, Major League Baseball announced that the rule covering pitching changes was not applied correctly by the umpiring crew.

The Angels played the game under protest before winning 6-5.

With Houston ahead 5-3, the Angels had two runners on base with two outs in the top of the seventh. Astros manager Bo Porter replaced right-hander Paul Clemens with left-hander Wesley Wright. But after Wright threw several warmup pitches, Porter reemerged from the dugout and replaced Wright with Hector Ambriz despite Wright not having faced J.B. Shuck. Luis Jimenez had been announced as the pinch hitter for Shuck.

Rule 3.05 (b) requires an incoming pitcher to face at least one batter unless there is an injury. However, the umpires allowed the pitching change to stand.

---Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Josh Johnson will be out of action for at least the beginning of June with right triceps soreness.

Johnson, who has not pitched since April 21, was placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday. The team hopes he can make a rehab start by May 21.

---The Chicago White Sox activated outfielder Dayan Viciedo from the disabled list after he missed three weeks with a strained oblique muscle.

--- Chicago Cubs reliever Kyuji Fujikawa is back from the disabled list after missing the past four weeks with a strained forearm.
